NO,id guess a unit would cost you 30/40/50k ,a far better idea would be to take a look at the stobart group website, there offering you a truck, gauranteed work, and a good wage for just £12,000 pounds, you would save yourself all the hassle of finding work with decent rates as they gaurantee you work and a good wage, trying to find a decent second hand truck[provide you with brandnew one] and the icing on the cake would be you would save yourself 10,s of thousands of pounds.
its certainly worth a look, best of luck in what ever way you chose to go
You back on the strong cider again ADY1

He is talking about becoming an owner driver, not paying £12,000 to become a Stobart employee in all but name.

I drive for a farmer doing bulk haulage and they have said to me if they had to pay rates they wouldnt still be running!Being farm based thy dont have to pay them.Bulk haulage is paid per tonne and to many people are under cutting because those with ten plus trucks really are struggling. We were leading from Cranswick near Driffield to Hull dock on a boat job and were getting £4.50 a tonne but it wasnt really worth doing as you were sat about to long.Someonne came along and knocked a quid off and he got all the loads on the saturday. The bloke i work for wont undercut like that they have been doing the job to long. The rates out of Liverpool arent really that good whch is why we run back from manchester into Yorkshire and do two or three local loads. One subbie got £7.50 a tonne from Liverpool back to Flixbrough near Scunthorpe. There are to many people trying to fight for the same work and what with the cost of fuel etc i would say just dont bother!!! Whatever line of work you choose you are going to struggle with so keep your cash until things pick upThank you
The only descent answer I have had ā¦
Maybe it is a decent answer but the rest are harsh reality.
I know 2 owner drivers, one with a fanny 143, the other a volvo FH16 and both are finding it real tough. Infact, make that one of em since the guy with the 143 has already thrown in the towel and declared himself bankrupt. I would see him out in the unit nigh-on every dam day god send with a bulk tip trl and he still couldānt make it pay.

In the 90ās you could buy a 10 year old truck for Ā£5000, rent a trailer for Ā£100 a week all in, theyād throw fuel cards at you and you could be set up for not a lot of money.

I would say that if there was one thing guaranteed to lose money faster than a truck over the next two to three years, it would be a house.

to be honest if your seriously looking at your own motor you should have some idea of work lined up. you should be able to quote for a job or have a rough idea, and with fuel prices going as a single operator expect to work to pay everyone else, we ran 2 trucks and pulled the plug in 1998 due to the poor rates high fuel and long hours.
if your serious and want to go it alone go somewhere like maritime lease one of their trucks with the work that way at least they will make sure you have enough to pay for the vehicle and trailer each month

Yes. Let us know how it all pans out!
I done it when there was a fraction of the BS you have to contend with now, given a choice today I would rather do this ,you would stand a better chance of surviving.

If you buy a nice house where people want to live, then you will be able to rent it out and make money with very little hassle. The value of decent houses has always been a good investment and will continue to be so in my opinion.
I know a man who ran a tipper in the 90ās he worked all hours had no social life and finished up broke.
Itās a cut throat business and the costs of running a truck go up as the rates continue to fall. Good luck if you have a go but I would not.
