Should I be using a tacho or not?

heres a quandry

I’m driving over christmas and new year for network rail, but not in my usual Volvo but a Iveco 7.5 ton mobile classroom thats used for safety briefings and such like

anyway went in to the yard this morning to collect the truck and the guy who does the classroom stuff .Anyway he wanted to know why I was writing out my tacho chart before starting the shift, as he said the normal driver doesnt use it, as its not a goods vehicle

surely it cant be right as its got a tacho fitted,■■?
anyway being a sensible chap I decided to carry on and use the tacho as at least that keeps me legal for recording my driving hours so whos right me in using the tacho or him who reckons its not a goods vehicle so

There is a UK exemption from the EU rules on drivers’ hours that may fit the vehicle in question.
Does the quote below fit your situation ?

In the"Rules on Drivers’ Hours and Tachographs" Derogations is:
Specially fitted mobile project vehicles, the primary purpose of which is use as an educational facility when stationary.

For example play buses and mobile libraries.

Either way, as you were unsure you were wise to play safe and use the tacho

Thanks for that

though to be on the safe side I’m going to carry on using the tacho
