I am at the moment driving a Daf ssc 105 460 and was told I would be getting a Volvo 500, it now turns out I’ll be getting a Mercedes Giga cab 480, has anyone drove both of these, to compare?
The current Volvo is very very overrated, and I’ve got one so I can talk with experience. I’ve not had a merc in the current model, and I know they have their critics, but I wouldn’t have the hump if I got one. Anyway, it looks like I’m getting an man, so you’re lucky to get a merc
Havent drove the Volvo but the Merc is a nice peice of kit to live with.
More importantly can the limiter be hacked and what gearbox you gettin.
Out of the 3 i would go for the Merc hands down
It is not a personal attack on yourself, but who cares what type of vehicle your boss decides to spend his money on, at the end of the day , you get paid .
The one mentioned are all top spec, so why complain ?
If he said away all year in an ERF twin splitter Eaton gearbox or a Pegaso Troner, now we are talking tramping around Europe.
Give me a Volvo FL 10 nick named the Wendy house, to put the trousers on, you would have to open the cab door .
Car transport drivers are happy with small cabs .
Both very nice trucks had both but the Volvo has it over the merc and I’ve never really been a Volvo fan . Mercs gearbox and retarder takes a bit of working out but ok when u got the hang of it. I think the merc had a bit more space inside but the Volvo has more storage . I’m not sure merc do a 480 it was only 450 / 510

Or more subtley put, can you activate make the boat mode Like the paddy wagons do.
Drove a 63 merc. Horrifically underpowered, but it was a rental so probably bottom of the line.
Ive driven neither new Volvo nor Merc, but now having a new SSC I reckon you
re on a winner whatever!

The 480 is the new engine just came out, supposed to have more torque than the 500 volvo,
Gearbox is 12 speed auto with high torque on 12th, whatever that means!
“Gearbox is 12 speed auto with high torque on 12th, whatever that means!”
It means it`s a 480 in top gear, when you approach an uphill and change down, it switches itself into a 400 or whatever. Welcome to the 21century!
MERC is OK but the stream space is more short of space! No good as for tramping but our day men love them. Might be OK with a top bunk for storage but have had mine for 6 months and still have a bag on the floor and stuff on the bunk cos the overhead lockers are a joke.
Currently plodding about in a 65plate FH460,when I got it took some getting used to,the lane departure warning buzzer does my ■■■■ in going thro knutsford at the mo,
Doesn’t seem as solidly built as the 61plate FH used to have and the new one the steering wheel seems thinner to hold(maybe its just me lol) and the steering is a lot lighter than the 61plate,
But not as impressed as I thought I would be and the chuffing about to put the dog clip in is just stupid tbh and undoing it and pulling the handle nice way to get an oily arm lol.

It’s still a 480 BHP motor, just it’ll give you more torque, more pulling power, in 12th gear.
How much you earn is imoprtand. Dont bother about the Lorry. You cant change it anywhy
Spoke to a tanker/container driver yesterday who drives a new Merc 65 plate. Great to live in, massive cab if you get a mega or giga space. Engine though is weak but that could be because it’s a 450 and he’s pulling max weight all the time.

I for one would to an extent seeing as you spend 50-60 hours a week every week in it!
