after having my first experience of the toll collect in germany and of the GO system in austria i am wondering how many people on here believe that foreign firms should pay to drive in this country.
i believe it would be easy to collect as the government could make the ferry firms and eurotunnel to add it to the cost of the crossing.
was trying to do this as a poll but couldnt work out how.
I cannot see what is difficult here. When I used to go into Swiss they took x Francs per day off you for Road Tax. When you came out through Customs they checked your receipt. If it was in date you carried on, if it had expired then you owed them money and you didn’t get to leave until such time as you had paid.
Forgive me. Swiss is a land locked state, Britain is an island, what is difficult about applying a similar system in a country where the easiest ‘way out’ involves at least 35 minutes on a train or an hour on a boat? Why bother spending billions on satellite tracking etc when every vehicle entering or leaving this country has to go through a port?
of course they bloody should - typical of us, squeeze our own hauliers to death with taxes but let EVERYONE else swan around free, 24 hours a day 365 days
per year
good point geebee about it not exactly being rocket salad to administer
Yes I m agree, all foriegn lorries should pay tax or toll in UK, i read Commerical Motor magazine last week, they estimate worth £3billions pound, foriegn lorries enter uk without paid fuel, tax, toll, parking ticket, worn out tar surface and accident (blindspot) make police cost more money and work.
Foreign lorries are like as men! UK are like as women! when man have a onenight stand with her for fun!(S**) then walk off next day leave her, treat to UK like dirty, cheap and destory the UK!!!
I do remember Gordon Brown will talk and action plan about charge the foreign lorries in few years ago, they will start from 2005 but nothing happens!!! now recent goverment will do charge the lorries in some years later not now!!!

Ben.
That’s why I left the UK, got fed up being treated like a cheap tart
On a more serious note, everyone needs road transport, we all know that, so why should anyone, anywhere, pay tolls? Roads could be funded out of general taxation, like railways and hospitals, we all end up paying, sure, but at least millions wouldn’t be wasted on collecting it all.
How hard can it be to put a porta cabin at every port of entry where any none UK trucks could pay with a built in cost in the price for the cabin , where the non uk wagons could pay for using the uk roads, not ■■■■■■■ that hard is it
Spardo:

Salut, David.
True, they could but look how much money the road fund licence raises in revenue and how little percentage of it goes on roads. I don’t think the government (whoevers in power) will be in a hurry to implement road building out of general taxation (unfortunately).

There is an article in this weeks C.M. that suggest it will be 2015 at the earliest and 2020 more likely.
I get the feeling that it is a clsoed door, smokey room deal - something to do with the rebate the UK gets from the EU ?
Lorry charging was shelved about the same time as the French were kicking up about the rebate, and we all know the French & Germans run Europe, don’t we?
jessicas dad:
how about every lorry that has foreign plates that comes through the ports in bound pays £50.
It’s a nice idea but it can’t happen.
If you were charging the foreign ones £50 a week, UK ones would also have to pay £50 a week. Under EU law you cannot introduce a tax like that against certain countries. That is why the Germans pay the German Maut, The Austrians their Maut and the Belgians, Dutch, Danes etc pay the Vignette even if they only ever travel within their borders. That’s EU law I’m afraid and like it or not we are in the EU and can only introdeuce a tax for all trucks.
If the UK does finally get round to introducing a Road user Charge for trucks it is likely to be something along the lines of the German Maut so it can more easily be applied to UK registered vehicles as well. Only charging a tax at ferry ports, the Channel Tunnel and NI/ROI border means it wouldn’t apply to the vast majority of UK vehicles and that is a no no.
froggy:
Spardo, you have all people know full well that the french will never pay for autoroutes they never use.
Neither will anyone else, I merely point out what I think is most sensible. As Coffee said, it isn’t going to happen, but I was very disappointed that the Germans and others who never used to have tolls started down that route instead of trying with the Brits etc to persuade others the opposite way.
It’s no skin off my nose, I almost never use autoroutes, there’s no road tax in France for cars (as you know), and I don’t earn enough to pay income tax so I don’t pay either way (except in the price of goods I buy). Just thought it would save a hell of a lot of money that could be put to better use - like building better roads.
Yes they should pay, either by a daily fee or better still with a millage fee, take their millage on entry into GB and again as they leave.
As for the maut in Germany, unless you’ve got the box the whole thing is a joke, very complicated and it doesn’t allow for human nature and the ensuing wrong turns and delays. What gets me most about it though is that German trucks are charged too, I really would have thought the German trucks in Germany would go free so they atleast had some advantage over cheaper foreign trucks, especially from E.Europe.
Spardo, you know there is a way in which the UK could make it,s self a"level" playing field, just like the french do,any non UK reg truckdriver should be "asked"to take an assesment on thier competencey to drive on UK roads(just like you and me had to) ,and this should be made official not run by dodgy agency before they can work/drive over in the UK and this could apply to drivers in trucks coming in to the UK,make them take a test before they run over a poor car driver pulling in or out on the UK motorways, after all “The UK” drives on a different side to the road to the rest of euroland and I do not see how the ■■■■■ in brussels could win any objection.
How about divide the annual road fund lisense up for each class of vehicle by 365 then when a foreign vehicle comes over for x amount of days that is the amount they pay
