As usual the press exaggerate - the standard arms used by armed response are 9mm Glock 17 pistols and Heckler and Koch MP5 9mm semi-auto carbines, which are not strictly rifles.
Same as what the SAS use for anti terror operations and hostage situations so very powerful indeed.
