It amazes me I get out of the lorry with a high viz and hard hat and I can never find anyone to see where they want there load tipped. I get out without ppe on and im beating people off with a stick. This is now my normal route to find the man I need to speak to.
Haha, I noticed that as well. When I got out from my van in hi-vis, everyone dissapear, as they expect that they will have to do some work, signing paperwork etc.
So I jump out and walk as I am and usually someone approaches me, propably because they are nosy and think that I am some random passer by who just happened to look for something in their place then if they ask me to wear hivis or something, I usually agree no problem
Just open the tailboard, KR; Someone will appear faster than a genie saying “You can’t tip there…”
I was slightly shocked today when a TM came down with two pairs of short for me. I have been wearing some of my own for most of this week/last weekend. I’m grateful, and glad I can wear them as most of the trucks do not have aircon, but I think I will look like some kind of dodgy go-go dancer wearing the ones they have given me…
I suppose because they have to or they won’t be admitted to the premises.
Yet another reason why I prefer doing continental work, it’s hard to imagine anywhere in Spain or Italy banning you from wearing shorts, or telling you to wear a yellow nylon vest which attracts aphids and other winged insects because they think you must be a flower.
I think that in the U.K., the Little Hitlers who wear suits look out of the office window and are angered by the sight of people wearing comfortable clothes. All office workers hate truck drivers simply because of their perceived freedom.

I shall be wearing my shorts tomorrow and the only H&S problem I can see is people being blinded by the white glare of my milk bottle legs! You have been warned!

To be honest (and no joke!), whether or not a Company will allow a Driver to wear shorts makes in-roads for me as to whether I will work for them or not. It can be difficult as an Agency Driver, but generally speaking a lot of the bigger firms hate it (Royal Mail excepted). I have been escorted off DHL (lutterworth and Bicester, BP and Kraft respectively)), Stobarts (Crick) and Wincanton Argos (Corby) for turning up in shorts over the past 2-3 years, to name but a few. A lot of these companies seem to have a more federalised approach to this, as I turned up recently at DHL’s Staples contract (on the A5 just north of Weedon) in shorts and nowt was said. NFT Asda at Crick will allow it, providing they are knee length and dark coloured, but NFT Sainsbury’s just down the road won’t have any of it. DHL BP at Lutterworth were by far the worst, the transport clerk type jobbie, came out of his hole and litterly prodded me in the chest, pushing me backwards saying it was a ‘blanket’ DHL policy "NO SHORTS ALLOWED’ and I was to get off site immediately. Thank God for Fowler Welch though…

old health and saftey have now stopped us wearing shorts at work !! i know its not a big thing once out of yard and all that but anyone else been stopped from wearing them ■■
not going to start a peasants revolt are you steve ?
bit of a grey area here mate , i went to the SLG meeting & shorts were disscussed & it was an awkward point for any real argument against from what could gather , it was agreed that a disclaimer could be signed if you wanted to wear them as long as they were MVF issue, but even that has be retracted, so no shorts !
i’ve not got the legs for it anyway !

It isn’t that much of a blanket policy, shorts are listed on the uniform requisition form. If roll cages are involved then you probably won’t be allowed.

Annoyed me just reading it. You must have patience. Latest at our place is every load has to be risk assessed then put into a folder that the driver can read if that load is ever picked up again.

Covering arse again. Wearing shorts and going ■■■■■■■ has been banned from most building sites for years, its claimed Melanoma will be the next Asbestosis.
Seriously?? Yet most work places provide a dedicated area to smoke in H&S constantly have to come up with new rubbish to keep themselves employed.
Surely it breaches their human rights to try and stop them?
Hah, good point: if you become scottish sikh you can wear kilt and don’t wear a hard hat to work Now lets try to find some religion/nationality that is not allowed to wear safety boots or hivis…
