Perhaps they ought to start looking this way for drivers.?

living for weeks at a time in the cramped confines of the back of the truck

It’s a shame they are not interested in sponsoring anymore.

I enquired about US immigration as a truck driver 2 years back, and basically got told that “Because I’ve not paid off my mortgage yet, you’re not well-heeled enough”.

Apparently, you need £250k+ behind you when you liquidated everything in the UK, and head across the atlantic. :frowning: :frowning:

There might be a rising number of jobs, but as the article suggests, they are interstate jobs (basically extreme tramping) rather than domestic runs. No sponsor means it’s hard to get established accomodation, and there is a veritbale minefield of the usual shysters who will charge you fees for basically sending you glossy brouchures that deliver nothing but utopian empty promises of ideal employers that turn out to be rather thin on the ground.

I think I would jump at the chance of being paid my expenses to move over there - I even had Idaho marked down as the state I wanted to live in!

I remember about 12 years ago they were so desperate they were giving a new BMW car to drivers who started with a co. and stayed a min. period.

They should, they don’t want our services here anymore, it’d make sense…

It’s bullshine same as here with Skills for logistics claiming there is a driver shortage here! If all they say was true! Show us the money, facilities and professional status with immigration!

We think the jobs bad here tramping! Some OTR drivers in the good ole USA are away for months at a time to earn a reasonable amount of money! That’s why they can’t get anyone for love nor money!

Forget any ideas, you will not get in there.Unless of course you want to marry some grossly overweight pig  .

Mmtm that the only reason American Police officers carry guns is because they are too fat to run after anyone

Not everyone is away for that amount of time but it depends what company you go for same as in the UK. Also dont forget if you do euro work out of the UK chances are you be on a nice wage but away for months at a time also… I would rather do a month away in this freightlinertrucks.com/Truck … le-Comfort then a globetrotter :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

There are a few British coach drivers going out to Canada to work,I believe that the USA is just about impossible to emigrate to nowadays.Remember there are a lot of con.artists offering what they cant deliver.

I reckon the safest way to play it is entertain offers from actual employers with geographic contact points only.

The gaffer in the actual yard where you want to go who invites you over for a “holiday” to see what it’s like (he provides free accommodation, you just pay your plane fare to get there…)

This kind of deal would be of no use to “send money now” shysters, so should not be subject to any lousy cons should it?

I’ve had two former workmates in the past decade both go to Canada on that very system! They both had huge equity in their sold-up uk properties, and jumped the hurdle I fell at however.

IIRC if you’re from the UK you can’t enter the green card lottery (or whatever it’s officially called) which is the way lots of immigrants get to the US.

No company will pay for you to come over for a “holiday”. They do that when you go over for work and thats because they got to provide you with a return ticket by law but even then you gotta pay for yourself to get your Canadian ticket and you hotel bill etc while you are doing it. From landing to gettting on the road I’m looking at about $5k in my pocket and should have some left over

Apparently Canada has a temporary work scheme for migrants and there are jobs on offer to tramp Canada, USA and Mexico.
No need for accommodation on a job like that. If you want a few days off, it would be cheaper just to check into a motel.

I worked across the pond in a different category (IT), got sponsored by the firm for a J4 Visa then I got my normal work visa and made sure that my social security card had the ‘Not available for Employment’ removed from it. They are very strict on that and the SSN is used for just about everything. To get a sponsor was initially a problem as they have to advertise in Local press for the same US Citizen that has your qualifications. Then if you’re tied to the employer on a visa and you want to move you need to go through the re-sponsorship all over again. Initially the Green Card lottery was open to all with as many applications as you wanted, then they decided that one application per person and certain nationalities were to be excluded. Just before I came back UK Citizens were excluded from applying. There are Lawyers who will do all your paperwork but will charge you an absolute fortune for this.

Even if it was possible to do it, I wouldn’t advise it to anybody, driving a truck for a US based company is not all it seems. They earn peanuts to start with, then they spend days hanging around for zero pay, the drivers go out for months at a time and if they’re lucky they may get a week at home, the trucks are nothing like you see on TV, most big firms run very basic trucks, some are complete junk. The average wage for an over the road truck driver is around $35,000pa :unamused:

There are some decent jobs over there, but none of those companies will be having problems getting drivers, so you won’t stand a chance with them :bulb:

If the USA and Britain has such a special relationship, why did they stop us being in the green card lottery and make it so difficult for a British citizen to move and work there.

The amount of ‘British’ fighting for the Taliban in Afghanistan does not do us any favours on that score :open_mouth:

Bad news ! … $37,000 is riddiculouly low wages for the USA.
More bad news … Nobody from the UK can get a job driving a truck here unless they hold a green card. The USA does not issue green cards for truck driving jobs, you have to be either closely related to a US citizen (Son, Daughter, Spouse etc).
US compaies that post ads in the UK are scammers, they ask for a fee to check your status then tell you that you do not qualify, don’t fall for it.
