I have been working for agency for last couple of years doing weekends 02am starts etc. etc… and I am quite enough now. I would like to have much more time for myself and preferably weekends off. I am not that much worry about money, however at least 9£p/h would be nice.
Could someone give me some idea of potential driving jobs which would meet above criteria?
I was thinking about driving Dustcarts - heard opinions that it’s 6-8hours job with weekends off and generally not bad work. Any experience, comments on that? If so, is there anyone who could advise on, how to get this job? Looking for adverts on-line? Ringing local council refuse dep. and ask for potential position? Or maybe there are some agencies dedicated for this particualr field?
Any other ideas? Skips, scaffold companies?
I will apriciate every constructive comments and advise.
All that you mentioned sounds positive how about staying with the same agency but doing warehouse work or do a fork lift course or taxi if driving is all that you want.

It would help if you said where abouts you are, but anyway skip driving could be good for you its mainly Monday to Friday day work with perhaps a Saturday morning thrown in sometimes but not sure you would get the pay rate you said, dust cart driving is a little difficult to get into I think it might depend on who you know. Best of luck.
The night driver at our place who took over the Battersea run at night from me (Sunday-Thursday) starts at 7pm (4pm Sundays) and is back finished (after shunting the trailers to the bays) at about 1am (1030pm Sundays). No Bank hols (unless u stick ya hand up, paid at DT) 35hrs/wk tops, paid 48 for 28k. Needless to say, the queue is loooooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg!!

Driving certainly isn’t all I want to be doing. However my thinking is that is still best money for value solution since I don’t have any profession or serious qualifications.
However this is whole point I wan’t to take more time off to organise my life arrange some curses start new carrier.
Forklift driver is not bad idea however I have no experience at all. Is there anyone who know how much and how long is training for FLT also realistically would it be difficult to find job position for freshly qualified FLT driver? What’s are your views?
Taxi job -sux!

I am living in Barking, however for good job always willing to relocate as I am not tied by commitments
My son does refuse wagon driving for the local council during his holidays - it’s handled through an agency (I think it’s a Biffa contract) & he says it’s great as far as hours are concerned, but the money’s not brilliant. So it may be worth asking around as to if there’s a local agency that handles it where you are. He’s also tried skip lorries, but didn’t enjoy that much - too much chasing your tail & getting aggro from builders & members of the public (in a skip lorry you’re on your own, on refuse lorries there’s a load of others to help out if needed).
Hi Biker. It’s a shame you live in the UK as there are quite a few jobs up here in the mining sector with a lot of free time.
Idrive a tipper underground in a mine.Iwork 7 days 0500 to 1430.Then 1 week free. Then 7 days 1430 to 2400.then 1week free fro around £2300netto per month.BUT you have to like the cold and snow as we have about 6months of winter with temps down to min 45c Mike
Skips? No as the hours are long, 12hr shifts, low basic rate.
Bins? Crap pay, short hrs, rubbish job, accident prone.
Scaffolding? Yes, good pay, socialable hrs, easy to get into. Hard graft though, pick ups, bad weather. Phone ten companys probably get a start for the rates you want.
Night trunking. Generally shortish shifts, no nights out or weekends and very little in the way of manual effort involved.
My current job is an 8 hour shift, paid for 9.5 hours and only do Monday to Friday with 63 - 64 hours weekly rest every week. Except for the odd occasion less than 4 hours driving per shift, 15 minutes or so other work and the rest of the rest of the shift is spent dozing, on the net, watching videos, or reading. Best job I’ve ever had.
My good friend is doing a night shift where he works between 5 and 5.5 hours a shift, paid for 8. Starts at 19:00 and is done a little after midnight.
7days on 7off and still and still 2,3 a month. That sounds really good. However I don’t really consider moving to Sweden now. Is it it any problem to not speaking Swedish?
I have done couple shifts on dust carts for agency time ago. It was really good 06am start usually 12noon finish, also crew was rally fun and easy going. I have enjoy that. But It could be one of ti’s kind.
@Caffeholic
I used to been driving overnight… and it always was 12h+ long distance driving. However if I would find something like yours I would be highly tempted.
You could try builders merchants, typically money is, £17-18k. I do 0700 till 1530 but often work till 1700-1800, but thats through choice. Its not a bad job, but expect ■■■■ loads stacked right up and silly tight acesses are the norm.
Hi Biker. It was really a little light hearted comment because many guys have asked me on the forum what are the possibilities for moving to Lappland. I tell them all it’s no problem, there is a lot of work, people are friendly and helpful and learning Swedish comes with time.It is a good life here with good money for little work and lots of time to spend it.you can work also your ‘‘free’’ week and that is paid as overtime so the possibilities are endless. Then i tell people that my nearest supermarket is 40kms away and we have 6months winter. Then everyone throws a wobbly. Its what you make it.For me it’s good as i’m old and just want to earn a bit without all the stress of WTD,H andS,and no tachos. but it’s not for everyone.Mike

pay was 13.00 p.h,sounds good, was if you liked time at home, finish fri midnight-monday 17.30,finish midnight mon-fri,not back until 17.30,ive never had so much spare time ,pay of £13.00 p.h ,not bad at all.
but the problem was the top line was £400 p.w[thereabouts],50 hrs pay,so it was really £8.00 p.h,its just if you divide £400 by the 30 hrs you were doing you could say you were on £13.00.
my point is you say you want £9.00 p.h,you dont want many hours, are you content with 40x£9.00=360 p.w,50x£9.00=£450 p.w,if you are good.
i had a few other issues, but even though job was short hours,if you worked your pay out on 30 hrs you were on 13.00 p.h you still only earnt £400 gross at end of week.
instead of saying i want £9.00 p.h,short hours,id be saying i want £600 p.w for as short hours as i can get, cant understand this fixation on hourly rate, its what your top line/take home at end of week that matters,£10.00 p.h sounds good, but if its on gar 40 hrs p.w its not very good.
job by the way was evening trunking, not sure if job exists or not now

Yeah, obviously i understand math :> 600£ for 40hrs of work, I surly wouldn’t mind that but i know in this job one comes at the price of another… and this is the biggest issue here ins’t it?
You see, I am 28yrs old, have no family nor mortgage to payoff but I have loads of interests and I get to conclusion that I am either spending life in cab (in the name of… not sure what) or make an use out of my life.
30 hours for 400£ would be close to perfect for me. This is what I am looking for. Any ideas about which doors to knock at?
