Better start stockpiling guys there will be nothing free to ■■■ into soon (HOUMOUR…!!!)
Oh no, us agency drivers have lost our free source of work bags now…
For 5p I demand a quality carrier in future, not the ones you put a loaf in and the bottom falls out…
Just extra profit for some companies and saving for supermarket companies.People leave rubish, bags anywhere and will be.Not easy change people stereotypes and life stile.
Its been going on up here in Scotland for a couple of years now. Not a real problem but places like Asda started taking the thin bags away at the self service checkouts in case people didnt put them through to be paid for and you had to go and ask one of the asda aces (who are always standing around doing hee-haw) for the bags. Apparently all the george clothes and food in the main foyer and all the other stuff near the door is ok to be half inched but a 5p bag is a big no no and needs protected to ensure correct payment. Im paying for £60 worth of shopping but im not going to pay 15p for three bags?
Although (whisper it) sometimes if my shopping comes to £x and 91 pence ill only put 1 bag through to avoid having to break another pound for the sake of 1p. And esp if i would need to break a tenner. I walk out with my heart pounding like I have smart tv stuffed in my coat but it smells like VICTORY!!!
Saw a bit on TV this morning where the woman stated that if you buy something like fresh fish or meat that could possibly contaminate other food stuffs then the bag comes free, but woe betide you if you decide to bung a tin of beans in the same bag as then the dreaded 5p charge becomes payable, I’d struggle outside with all my goodies in my arms then put them in the same bag.
Have to go to Tosco later for some Whyte & Mackay litres of Scotch @ £16 a throw, so will try that
Is this a government rule, or are supermarkets working together ? good idea to stockpile the goods onto the conveyor, then ask if theyre charging for the bags to cart it away…if they say yes…just walk away leaving it on the conveyor.
Its a government thing ,wait till you buy clothes and the charge you lol,Up here McDonalds and burger king charge for the paper bag lol…You will get used to remembering to take bags after a while …Ie one in the car for emergencys
This legislation works perfectly well in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but the politicians couldn’t leave it be and bring it in in simple form to include all companies in all scenarios. Any company with under 250 employees is exempt and there are so many holes in the legislation it isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.
In order to reduce the administrative burden on both start-up and growing businesses all they have achieved is bureaucracy at it’s finest.
Ive started stockpiling every time I go to Asda and Morrisons, have been for about a month. I have to use self service tills so I can get away with the amount I take (usually about 20-30)
It’s suprising how many you can go through a week when you are out tramping. Imagine going to the checkout and asking for 2 pounds worth of bags in October, I bet the lass behind the till will tell you to get knotted!
Probably lead to more crap dumped on the streets, lay bys and industrial estates but this time not in carrier bags
Not just supermarkets, B&Q have been charging for bags for a while. Morrisons home delivery service (which we use a lot) get around it by taking the bags back for recycling. I suppose you lads who use them instead of a WC can always wash them out and reuse them, do your little bit for the environment?
Pete.
Won’t make a blind bit of difference, who on earth is going to question paying 20p for 4 bags when they’ve just spent £30 or £40 on shopping

Me. I always take my own shipping bag. Too tight to spend 5p.

Since it came into effect in Scotland, I think it was late last year or maybe early this year it came into effect. The amount of carrier bags given out has went down by 80% so it clearly does work. Or maybe it because us Scots are so tight
Personally it bugged the hell out of me at the start but now I always have bags for life in my car for the weekly shop and usually have a bag for life in my pocket if in town. Totally ran out of carrier bags in the house though used to use them as bin liners.
I personally don’t think it should include paper bags but it does
Watch what you do in some fast food places. They ask if you want a bag, you get charged 5p if you say yes and you end up with a fancy paper bag you didn’t actually need…
It’s a con. Look at how much plastic waste is in food and household packaging. At least with plastic carrier bags people did reuse them.
Mrs does our shopping online from Sainsburys and the Scottish carrier bag charge is capped at 40p per shop no matter how many bags the use. I’ve noticed they now offer to deliver your shopping bagless now.[emoji15] Bet the drivers love delivering groceries to the 6th floor with no bags.
When I was a young 'un in the wilds of Suffolk we used to have our main shopping delivered by the co-op in a cardboard box every week, don’t shops use them any more ?
The money in Scotland goes to charity anyway, but like others have said, you quickly get used to having bags for life readily available or you become an expert at juggling when you forget.
There must be people on here who do the same as I used to. I was going to a major rdc in Brisbane at least twice a week with a full 40’ trailer load of plastic shopping bags, and I wasn’t the only one going there either. There are less people in the whole of Queensland than there are in London, so it’s bloody mind boggling the amount of bags they go through that then have to be got rid of.
Anyone who’s done shop deliveries will know there’s usually a cage full of carrier bags on each load.
Personally I tend not to use FOC carrier bags, and for 1-6 items I’ll actually take the item out of the bag if the assistant puts it in one, as there’s usually enough wrapping on the item and I’ve usually got the carrier bag with a wheel in each corner parked outside.
I also abuse the tesco self serve trick, where you can actually get green club card points for reusing carrier bags, despite not actually using any. Keying in more than 3 at the check out will trigger an alarm and summon the assistant

I usually key in 6 and never get checked
