Shelves not replenishing, very few trucks on the road?

Supermarkets almost back to normal here. A few things missing from our regular shop requiring purchasing of an alternative brand but nothing you can’t manage without.

Only thing I struggle with getting is eggs. None in my local shop or the big Tescos this morning.

My understanding of the problem is that supermarkets gear up for Xmas four months in advance. We had Xmas and Xmas plus on some items, so the whole sums chain is knackered.

The farmer who has millions(?) of spare eggs would have been o “Farming Today” BBC R4 weds morning 25th March.
Maybe he’s a neighbour?

Ginger…in the Oldies section COVID thread has a lot of info on the supply side of things too.

I wish he was! Its definitely an inflexible supply chain problem rather than a production problem.

Most of the supermarkets are reducing the range they sell for now so empty warehouse could simply be the result of that. Certain items go on certain shelves and if they aren’t buying them in, the warehouse shelf is empty.

Aldi are likely more flexible than some of the others.

Biggest problem round here (Nottinghamshire) is milk for some reason. Oddly the farmers were complaining of a downturn but its not in the shops, so god knows where thats going wrong.

Bank holidays are also likely to affect trucks going in. Got to pay more money, so many suppliers will simply skip the booking until Tuesday when its much cheaper to deliver. Sane with supermarket deliveries.

Milk is i believe the same in the sense that millions of pints are getting tipped because its normally used in coffee shops etc but the excess is unable to be repackaged into retail packaging.

The cows don’t get turned off (unless I’ve been fiddling with them) for anything.

I swap a compactor at Arla in Leeds and the staff there say they are as busy as Christmas but they normally have loads of cream and other dairy products then. They are mainly doing milk, milk and more milk.
Last week the dairy farmers were complaining about a fall in the price they were being paid for milk. Surely it would go up if there was a shortage.
Not seen any problem in supermarkets around here, although I try and only do one supermarket shop a week atm ( normally mid morning on Saturday when stocks are good and lazy buggers are having another lie in)

Empty warehouses ? Ceva driver said Asda ( redhouse ) had cancelled 4 out of 6 of
There loads as no floor space in warehouse

We are on standard hours, very little overtime around and are giving holiday/lieu days. Its like January, volumes are down and nobody is buying anything apart from total essentials to survive. No walking down the aisle and thinking oh that’s new i’ll give that a try, impulse buys are proper down.

Dont know what stores you guys are going to that shelves are empty but in the last few days we have even been putting full pallets of pasta, rice, flour, handwash and sanitizer into stores. Most stores are complaining they are getting too much stock not too little “Christ not more bog roll” is heard regularly.
Only thing we have struggled with and are still doing a bit is eggs. I think thats because instead of grabbing a pastry on the way to work people are having breakfast at home every day so eggs are getting hammered.

Warehouse is chocka too, not as many supplier deliveries as usual but we are not getting the huge volumes of summer luxury items that we usually do like bbqs, picnic tables etc. Pretty much all of GM is through the floor, homewares and electricals etc. Despite the rise in day drinking with the good weather we are also seeing lower booze sales so all that is a big part of my depot, being ambient.

The only thing that is still lacking in my Co-oP is pasta, Ibruprofen and hand sanitizer. There are no empty shelves for anything else.

Probably because the medical advice just changed from saying don’t use ibuprofen to saying it’s OK with the virus.

Lower drink sales surprises me.
Pubs, restaurants, etc closed, so I can see there won’t be demand there, so would have assumed that would transfer, at least partly, into supermarket sales.

When will people start seeing why these supply chain issues are happening…

I think that its more that people dont have the money so they are only buying the needs rather than the wants. Not going on any data apart from what Ive been putting into store and looking at what people have in the trollies when I go onto the shop floor for some bits. Also with people only doing 1 shop instead of lots of little ones its a beast to carry home

Biggest pile of excrement I’ve heard    . All the guys on furlough on here could make up that “shortage”

Typical RHA…

So far out of the loop it’s embarrassing/cringe to listen to stuff like that.

Well went Sainsbury’s to do a big shop yesterday and as usual it was empty of fresh fruit and veg and nobody refilling the shelves, that’s pretty normal for my local to be honest.
The only things I couldn’t find were eggs and flour which I’ve been unable to get for a few weeks now.

There is nothing these ■■■■■■■ won’t use to try and get a plentiful supply of cheap drivers. :smiling_imp:

I’m seeing plenty of deliveries like Papa Joes and Dominoes… The eateries that do a home delivery takeaway service - seem to be doing a roaring trade right now…
The bods driving the wagons - I wonder if they are the usual crowd, or a bunch of rookies because the “usual crowd” have already moved on?

Anyone on here delivering Pizzas of late?

Ed: There’s a Dominos outlet 200 yards from my house, so it’s difficult to miss the amount of coming-and-going C2 vehicles from said establishment… I only have to look out the window when I hear the clatter of tail lift flaps come across the distance…

I worked for dominos until fairly recently and never heard of c2 being used or any subbies for that matter.
Apart from Scotland that is run by chiltern, all of England and Wales was done in house.
They were already overrun with normal demand so must have taken subbies on for the rush?

Pizza deliveries?
Yeah, I did that. Normal run was a 21,000 dropper. Did 24,000 drops once, but needed a 2nd night out on that one.

The m1 comming south today at 14.00 was like a normal day , lorry’s , cars pouring
Down , matrixes are being used again m6 to adjust speed so that points to more traffic ,
Talking to drivers who were furloughed but are now back to work .

Driving this, averaging 7 drops, with an average of 120 trays of dough for each store, with an average of 10 dough per tray, is 8400 pizzas a night, give or take a few.
I never did a night/day out though, in fact average shift was 8 hours but always paid for 12.
You sound like a hero, keep it up
