What is the point to drive through Lydney and some little villages on poor roads as in-cab company sat nav guided myself where as there is direct road B4228 taking from A48 to Coleford? I have checked for weight and bridge limits and the atlas does not show any of them on this route. Especially, it should be easy to get there whilst driving a 18t rigid.
Ha. This post takes me back. I do it on a regular basis and always go through Lydney.
I’ve been the way pimmer suggests, it’s not a bad route tbh. Coleford is one of those places that you see on a map, and look at nothing but white roads in from all directions, thinking how the ■■■■ will I do that, but it’s not that bad at all
Can’t you go up to Monmouth and along in an 18t. There’s a weak bridge but I think it’s 18t actual vehicle weight (ie empty artic can go over).
When I first looked at it I thought why would the want trucks there. Even now years later I run my sat nav many for eta’s and it tries to take me down all sorts of roads especially getting back north to M50 or M5.
You can go A40 Monmouth bridge is fine even for 44t.
Last time I did it was out of Bristol freightliner so I went Lydney, but came out via Monmouth as I was heading to the mids from there
Artics, even empty, are banned from the Bigsweir bridge in the picturesque Wye valley, since it was renovated, though I believe the weight limit has gone up. Current Googlemaps imagery (2009) is out of date.
I live in the Forest of Dean and know these roads well, personally I would always choose the Lydney route, there is no time difference going that way, and it is a better road.

I’m I right in think I can go M48 J2, A466, A48 then the tricky part sharp left on B4228 and follow this through. It’s the B4228 that I think I need to go but it looks narrow. Any locals any advice would be welcome.

The B4228 is not narrow at all, also the turning from the A48 onto the B4228 is not as sharp as it looks on the map
Check your truckers atlas that shows the bridge heights on those routes.
Thanks for that I knew I had been told that way but couldn’t remember.
