Setting up a website?

Evening,

I have been asked by a member of the family to find out how much and how easy it is to set up a website :open_mouth: . Basically its for advertising a holiday home in spain so really just needs to be pretty basic i guess with contact details and pictures of the accomadation and a description of available dates etc??

any idea’s were im best advised to look for a decent price/set up fee?
Cheers.

Freewebs is pretty basic. Maybe too basic

A lot of ISP’s also provide x-amount of web-space, sometimes even free!! if the site is going to be small i.e. a one-page ā€˜advert’, then that should sufice.

The site I made (a few years ago now) was quite easy and fairly good price (it’s still going!) and not too difficult; it was my first attempt. I used www.oneandone.co.uk.

I use OneandOne for my website, its pretty good value I think. Their own site creator is a bit crap but they give you a free copy of Microsoft Frontpage, which once you get it working with all the correct info to connect to your site, is a much better way of doing it.

I’ve used Microsoft Frontpage which was quite easy to get to grips with, but I prefer Dreamweaver MX 2004.

I did my city and guilds on Frontpage but the tutor gave me a copy of Dreamweaver, its far superior, and probably easier, certainly more professional

Of course I havent got the copy now as it is illegal to copy software :stuck_out_tongue:

Now i’m in shock!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I thought Frontpage was by far the easiest (the one time I tried Dreamweaver I struggled) as it was just like using MS Word or something similar. The only drawback with Frontpage (or so I was lead to believe) was the requirement for Frontpage Extensions so that it could be used/recognised by most of the FTP’s and hosts.

I usually compose all my eBay auctions using Frontpage to gain better effect (and of course, bids!!)

But just in case you remember about the one kicking about in the artic, you would know to PM me wouldn’t you Malc, as I’m sure we can come to a good arrangement regarding the price  :bulb: :smiling_imp: :stuck_out_tongue:

I also struggled with Dreamweaver first time and didn’t use it enough to really get to grips and understand it (it was a limited time trial one I had). My own website is done of FP 2000 and I know exactly what you’re saying about the server extensions Marcus, I’d had a nightmare of a time with them and as such, my database search page will not work because of this reason. Dreamweaver is incredibly expensive to buy so if anyone has a copy lying about …

I too couldn’t get my head around dream weaver, espcially for the layout I wanted for my website which is fairly simple to say the least. For my needs Frontpage is definetly a lot better, once you fathom out the correct uploading FTP address that is! Something I had no end of problems with!

I also struggled with dreamweaver but with a little persistance its a great tool, some of the other programs with macromedia studio mx are also a bit mind boggling too.

I use Fireworks for my graphics and flash for animation, flash has to be the one to get your head around took ages for me too, but hey im just a simple trucker…

Totally over priced though but if you can make money from website design it pays for itself without a doubt.

I have a flash site at the moment ( albeit under construction)and to get the input information to send out of the contact form was a nightmare to work out, after about 2 days of trying i cracked it.
Had some graphic design company contact me asking for the code because they were having trouble working it out…take the mikey or what, thats like me contacting them and asking them to design a logo for me because im no good a graphics ( which i do struggle on) lol

RobK i might have a spare disc knocking about

Regards

Manny

flash has to be the one to get your head around

I use Coffeecup Firestarter. using the WYSIWYG editor you can do most effects very easily… more complex arrangements can be done using the X/Y editor
