So anyway, there I was on the above date waiting for my night shift to start and contemplating the Driver CPC.Thinking how much my wage was going to increase;how much respect this new qualification would gain me from my employer and delivery points alike;the extra respect from private motorists for all the hard work involved and the stress of a tough exam to gain the qualification. Then I thought how glad I was that
I hadn´t bothered.I am 67 now and really was growing to dislike the job generally. The clincher for me is shown in various other threads bemoaning the poor standard of driving of many of our so called professionals.Finished on a winner though.Due to traffic problems my unit was delayed and I was too late to do my run.Sent home early,Brilliant.Thank you and goodnight.Paul HG.
Too much traffic is the main one for me, I appreciate the wagons were pants in the 70’s but imagine the space on the roads!

Hiya can you imagine going over the Thelwall viaduct at 65mph northbound at 7.30 am in a morning not bothered about slowing down until you get to the A7 Carlisle 40 mph dual carriageway up to Alowa. maybe the old Gardner would slow down on a few hills but there wasn’t cars messing you around like today…silver surfer we was young and loved it

Thelwall Viaduct , 1971 Accident
At approximately 8am on 13 September 1971 thick fog led to a catastrophic multiple vehicle crash on the viaduct. More than 200 cars, trucks and tankers piled up, five vehicles burst into flames, 10 people were killed and 70 injured. It was the worst accident ever recorded on British roads at that time.
