Highways Agency Should give a clue in itself…

How many of those bods in yellow overalls wandering around the roadworks at night do you think have full time contracts on big money?

There’s a fair few of them that look like they’ve been press-ganged from the middle east…
Don’t tell me that these guys are minimum wage sheds with beds mohammed-come-latelys?
How much does an actual plant operator get? Does he get a full time lucrative contract?
Is the contract so good that it’s actually worth going self-employed to up the takehome income even more?

Blimey what a load of bs.The quality of life in the countryside is governed by it being there to start with and not bulldozed to create yet more and bigger motorways and/or filled with concrete structures etc etc and pointless service areas in green belt areas just a few miles up the road from others such as in the case of Downside.Who the zb needs around 20 miles between service areas. There is a point where we have to say enough and get on with using what we’ve got and give the countryside a rest. :unamused:

Holy mother of god I agree with Carryfast. We’ve enough roads, lets make do with what we have, once we tarmac over yet more precious countryside we will never get it back. I’ve not read beyond the headline but I can answer why we haven’t got roads like the French, the same population in a much smaller area. British roads are busy, get used to it.

The fear that the UK will soon all be built over is just a scare story as 98% of britain is still green fields or open land, so a few more roads and service areas ain’t going to make a lot of difference.
But after saying that where we live is going to have the proposed HS2 rail line built about 150m away and within view, were not happy about it so it must make us nimbys :grimacing: but thats a different subject altogether

Why not kickstart the economy with a massive programme of service areas with combined shopping opportunity, restaurants on a huge scale etc, theres no point worrying too much about the greenery adjacent to the motorway network as it stands,ie the damage is done but theres no reason why the cursed m25 shouldn’t massively expand it’s currently pathetic rest area availability.A decent spot of landscapery could be adopted, judging by the new Cobham services, not exactly easy on the eye is it?

Luke I think you need to read beyond the headline, what she’s asking for is better quality roads, street and motorway lights that light the road and not the sky. More facilities, but not just huge service areas, just somewhere that you can get fuel, go to the toilet and have a break and places for trucks to park without having to squeeze into full laybys. better information, not out of date info or messages telling us to take a break when the nearest service area is miles away.

Plenty of room for more roads … just not the money to build them.

Another good Carryfast comment.

Its never ending, import even more people and they need more houses, more services, more water (should be a hose pipe ban in the South East any time soon), more schools etc, all of which inevitably lead to more roads.

Bloody pint pot Britain already has a quart in it, stop filling.

The roads would be a darn sight better if the idiots hadn’t followed completely the path that the sheep walked when they first layed them, all the roads in Wiltshire are ■■■■■■ apart from the 303.

But had very little to do with the article.

Approx £6 billion per year, also this revenue has been diverted from the roads since 1937!

which at current prices, doesnt buy a lot of tarmac, the M74 extention worked out at £138 million per mile! 43 and a half miles for £6 billion.
Although, average cost per mile of motorway was £30 million in 2011, approx 200 miles.
