Self Employment / Sole Trader

Any Assistance with the following appreciated:

1: I work a considerable amount of hours part time for a few local haulage companies as well as my permanent employment which is PAYE (my full time job allows me to have more than half the year off). I am looking at going sole trader for the driving for financial reasons (tax) and was wondering if anyone can give me advice on whether or not I will need to get Public Liability Insurance or if the companies can still be used. I plan to invoice the companies individually for the hours worked. If I need PLI can anyone give me an idea of cost and a cheap provider!!

2: Also what would seem to be a reasonable hourly rate for invoicing compared to the PAYE rate of £7 per hour, I know this is not great but it is regionally driven so to speak.

Any advice from anyone in a similar situation would be appreciated or from anyone who could possibly provide some guidance.
