been looking at agency route for work … especially self employed
how do you go round to setting ya status as self employed with tax office
Mine was all done through an accountant so don’t know what was involved off the top of my head.
Be aware that the majority of agencies won’t deal with self-employed drivers and will insist you go through Nova or Madison. All be aware of agencies that have employed drivers on their books that are guaranteed a wage every week even if there’s no work. You will be the last one in the queue to get work.
If you do continue down that route, make sure you have enough in the bank at the end of the year to cover you through the quiet period and also several thousand to pay your tax bill when it’s due as well which I’ve discovered has been the failing of many.
STVME 1. If you haven’t got time or don’t want the hassle yourself, contact a book-keeper / accountant. They will handle it all for you and should do any returns that need completing. Shouldn’t pay more than a couple of hundred quid a year all in.
- If you want to do it yourself, contact HM Customs & Revenue and they will guide you on what you need to do. It’ll save you the accountants fees but if you’re not half clued on whats what it can be a nightmare.
As far as finding work, phone round a few agencies and see what their policy is on s/employed before you commit to it.
* I know a decent accountant on Stratford Road in Brum if you want his contact details pm me

I’ve always thought that would be a bit like asking King Herod to do a spot of babysitting.

Any half decent accountant will save you far more than their fees.

yes yes. gives me the horrors just dialling the helpline number. they’re the only people in the world that really scare me
much better to let the acct have the pleasure

Actually Neil, if you conatct the Tax office for advice they are very helpful, just don’t wait for them to contact you. As for an accountant saving you money i don’t think thats strictly true for many small one man bands who only require basic book keeping records, receipts and are working to a “standard” expenses/costs formula.

Yeah, I know they are, or at least they ahve been anytime I’ve spoken to them, but they might not be inclined to point out everything you could be claimg for.

Even then I am sure the accountant will be able to find things they can claim that they haven’t done.
in my limited experience the taxman will tell you exactly what he wants you to know, which is as little as possible!
as for accountants, if they can’t come up with things that you didn’t know about to save you money, either your one yourself or they aint!

Mileage to work, meal allowance, work wear, cleaning, maps, mobile phone allowance(buisness use only), stationary, use of home as office. Anyone think of any more? And no “new computers, gearbox in the car” etc., please!
part time wage to the wife as secretary would spring to mind in your situation.
give me a few minutes, i’ll come up with a few
how about these?
company vehicle, maintenance of that vehicle plus running costs / depreciation.
expenses incurred sourcing work including cost of visiting potential clients plus % of home phone bill
costs of altering part of home residence for business use, -including equipping office, phone, fax, computer, printer, software and furniture- claimable on a yearly basis as updates.
pensions and other saving schemes, any training you can think of.
i’d have to get yearly accounts out and look at em individually to come up with anything more in depth but to be honest i’ve used an accountant for years so i don’t get that involved, for me, the best 4-500 quid you’ll ever spend.

No no, you couldn’t claim half that stuff as a self employed driver, it gets complicated, you wouldn’t get the vehicle. Home phone for buisness yes but you would only get the itemised buisness calls and it aint worth it, training yes, altering your home no, pensions well everyone gets allowance for them. Its the capital allowances you would struggle to get, but to be honest you would use most of your cash up claiming for what i said.As for giving the wife a part time wage the only let down would be if they seen her, i wouldn’t get a penny!
bit tricky because i only know what i’ve claimed for in the past but i’ve not been labour only for many years which i spose might make a difference.
be interested to know why you couldn’t claim for a company vehicle when doing a job that clearly requires you to have transport to variouse locations to do that job?

I’m guessing here, but i think its not essential because yo9u don’t need it to carry your “tools/equiptment” and work bag just won’t wear it for that!
You wont get this
company vehicle, maintenance of that vehicle plus running costs / depreciation.
what you can claim is 40p per mile allowence to and from work, this includes all maintanance ie service/tyres/mot/tax and so on,if you take another person with you to work you can claim another 5p per mile.this allownce also includes bus/coach/train/boat,ferry/plane or push bike,it can and is off set against your earnings as an expence to get to and from your place of work.
mind blowing so basically will the account do this for me lol or is it best just to keep weekly fuel reciepts and things like mobile phone bill and just open business bank account
and register as self employed is things like fax machine really needed
as any one that done this found them selfs better off per week as basically this what it boils down to
suppose it easier if you reghister with loads of different agencies so u dont get emergency taxed
but isn’t that purely travelling expenses?
i’m looking at what mike does for a living i.e freelance driver, which obviously involves driving to the yard of the firm he’s going to work for on that particular day, that yard could be 1 mile or 100 mile away in theory so a car is a necessity of the job, plus as a self employed person it would be excepted that he’s also going to do a fair bit of mileage visiting potential and existing customers.
even when i was in the building game and ran vans and pickups i always had a company car which i claimed for, lock, stock n barrel without a problem and i’ve claimed for office costs every year since i can remember, again without a problem and even when i extended the house to create an office i claimed the whole cost back including that vat.
whether they take a different view on the building trade if your employing men? i don’t know but i would’ve thought self employed is self employed.
not trying to come across as a clever [zb], just interested.

It’s 40p only on the first 10,000 miles, it drops to 25 ppp after that. Motor bikes are 24 ppm for all miles and pedal cycles are 20 ppm for all miles. I think those are the most recent figures.
