Self employed/accountants/west mids

Hi all I appreciate this has probably been discussed on here many times but I’m toying with the idea of becoming self employed. I believe I’m in a good position to make it work Iv read a few threads and what I need to do and it looks like the first thing I need to do is find a decent accountant but I must be the only driver who doesn’t know someone who already self employed… So I was wondering if any other fellow hgv drivers in the Midlands area can pass me onto a reputable accountant. Please be gentle and dont barrage me with the pitfalls of being self employed as I’m already aware of it like I said I believe I’m in a good position to do it and I wanna look at every angle…

Simple if your employed now stay with it. Think of the reason you want to go down this road

The obvious question on everyone mind is “self employed as what?”
Owner operator ?
Courier?
Agency driver?

Please elaborate

I don’t understand why there is so much negativity about going self employed surely if you can guarantee yourself permanent work which I can and you’ve got your sums in order then it should be ok right?

Its not that its negativity if you’ve got only onw client then you could be on a sticky wicket with hmrc unless you you’ve got more than one client or have another income stream. The reason I say this stay in a full time job if you have one is that your much more vunerable to being the first to to be stood down at a moments notice.then where do you replace the work from you wont get your pension.

If your going to take a wage as an employee of your own ltd company then this defeats the reason for going se in the first place.

I hear what your saying and yes I will only have 1 client I didn’t realise hmrc would look at it like that but it’s something to think about thanks for your input

Basicly it classes as disguised employment if you only have one client unless you can prove you have another income stream available

No … But it might help us to help you, & point you in the direction of a more specialist accountant, who has more experience of a specific type of “driver”
