Seems to be loads of job's about

Im thinking of changing jobs to reduce my petrol costs. There seems to be plenty of jobs advertised at the mo and the rates seem much better than this time last year. Are we seeing a recovery? I live about 15 miles from northants.
Any comments from your recent experiences.

The above is true if you believe the agencies. Apart from that there’s nothing hgv related around Oxford, I’m always looking online.

Careful, Advertisements and actual jobs could be a chalk and cheese moment

Recent experience? 99% bull ■■■■ jobs. Unless you have an interview and job offer with a bona fide company, stay right where you are. Even then, be very careful.

There is no recovery happening. There is no shortage of HGV Drivers. Most of the job advertisements are made by lying ■■■■■■■ agencies.

Few questions you need to ask yourself first. I’m assuming you’re permanent at your current job not temp.

  1. Is your present job under any kind of threat, be it outside pressures or your particular position?

  2. Do you dislike your present job, or the people you work with?

  3. Disregarding the bottom line, would a new job offer you either a better quality of life, or at least the same for less hours?

  4. Do your prospective new employers have a good track record of keeping drivers?

  5. Is your prospective employer an established company with reasonable prospects for the future?

If you can answer “yes” to at least three of those, then you could consider moving. If not stay put. I doubt there are many of us who haven’t, at some time, suffered from “itchy feet” and looked over the fence to see that nice green grass on t’other side. You do need to think carefully about ALL the consequences.

I think Mike Cunn’s comment is a little extreme, but I will give you one piece of advice. NEVER, EVER, quit a permanent job to go on agency unless you have no dependants or household bills, or the wherewithal to live off your savings for at least three months. Not many of us have that luxury.

Not all driving jobs get advertised; a lot of jobs get filled by friends of drivers already there who get tipped off about jobs / new contracts etc coming up; or I know a few guys who’ve got driving jobs by door knocking or phoning the Transport Office of local firms - get in before they even advertise for it.

dont ever trust what agencies tell you,i moved to swindon on jan 3rd this year 2013 on the promise of plenty of work the result was sitting on my behind for nearly 4 months i failed the assesment at honda for aligra then 3 months later when i was due another assesment i phoned them [aligra]and they said yeah sure come in tomorrow and we will talk about it,so i go in the next day and he says we are dead workwise,my point being why they could not tell me that the previous day on the phone is beyond me,like i said do not trust them

Aligra; Enough said.

I’ve just read through this twice, so I hope I’ve got it right.

You moved before you had the assessment? In other words, before any work was guaranteed, it being conditional on you passing?

More fool you. There’s an old proverb about not burning your bridges till you’ve crossed them. You can’t blame the agency for your failure mate.

A good job, a local job, is highly valuble.

It’s not just your fuel costs, it’s also your family time.

I look on the job sites on a regular basis…98% are agency…the days when you could walk out of one into another are long gone…the sooner the Government wake up and realise that there job jiggling figures are utter rubbish and agencys have bolloxed the economy the better, talk about throw away society…agencys treat people like rubbish and most are singing from the same hyme sheet.if you are on the books of a company i would stay there, the grass isnt allways greener.

I had an email today from a company who I’d emailed about 6 months ago looking for work. Asked if I’m still looking (yes I am but employed) and if so can they email me an application form. I’m going to apply as it’s an old established firm located in one of my favourite driving/delivery locations. So I’ll say don’t give up whenyou get a “no vacancies at this time” email from them.

There are few proper jobs about and the good ones will be filled by recommendation/word of mouth/walk ins, good jobs are seldon if ever advertised.

Going to be ever more licence holders looking for work, every year we import something like half a million people, those of whom don’t claim benefits will go into low skilled jobs which triggers workers squeezed out into getting their HGV’s.

The only way to beat this is to specialise, do skilled or hard lorry work which many can’t cope with.

This will not change unless enough of us vote out those who would flood our country with immigrants, the choice is yours, vote for more of the same or vote to stop it.
