No photos, so I may not be believed, but its gotta be on www somewhere. Driving along A8 between Aix-En-Provence and Cannes last Tuesday. Roadworks signs. Then cones and vans with flashing amber lights. Beyond them a Gendarme van with blue lights flashing. Hard shoulder and slow lane closed, 2 other lanes open. When passing there was a group of people stood around the light aircraft that was there!! Guess it was an engine failure or summat. Small 2 seater plane with low wings. On it
s wheels, fuselage on hard shoulder, right wing hanging over barrier, left wing hanging over slow lane. The area is hilly, rocky, with scrub and trees, so seemed a reasonable place to set it down. I guess.
Wonder what went thro minds of those driving as a silent airplane glides over their vehicle and lands in front of them??
Recovery? Fill with fuel and take off from autoroute? Wings off and transport out? Sling under a helicopter?
as daft as it sounds for recovery.
I was fishing in staffordshire once and seen a light aircraft in the air been towed by another light aircraft. i wouldnt think that was possible and was gobsmacked to see it. it seems dangerous to me to land two planes together.
Not your regular everyday sight I suppose but photos would have been preferable as some people will say it didn’t happen but I just found it …thelocal.fr/20160920/in-pics … ch-highway

Could that have been a glider being towed up? They do winch-launch, and air tow, and (believe it or not) self-launch. Yes, a glider with an engine!

Thats the one. Thanks for the link. That wing does look close to the concrete barrier doesn
t it.

I’ll expell that myth for you,the air craft being “towed” was a glider (with no engine) they take off with the engined aircraft towing it then one it gets to the right height they detach the tow rope to allow the glider to fly freely…how do you think a glider takes off when it has no engine?

I now have a mental image of a fella picking it up, holding it around the fuselage and running full pelt across the field before launching it into the air!

Quite possibly was a glider, im not to switched on with aircraft. me and heights really do not get on.
In all fairness i thought they all had engines, i previously worked at a place in abingdon right next to an airfield and they had a glider school they would drive up and down the airfield all day and occasionaly take off.

I like that, I can just imagine a plane stuck stationery in midair with the flyways agency wombles coning off half a mile of sky with hover cones.
The poor stranded pilot whilst waiting for the AA is informed whatever he does not to get out of the plane and wander around whilst awaiting recovery even if wearing a hi viz vest.

I read on a different link that it was moved over by recovery so they could keep a lane flowing .

you forgot the bit about the pilot being given a bin liner to wear and being sent over out of the way to sit on a cloud for safety.
i went to liverpool on a plane last week and it had engine failure in 1 of the engines, the pilot informing us that we still had 1 good engine to land safely in scouseland, but that we would be 20 mins late…i remember remarking to the guy sitting next to me…if the other engine breaks down,we will end up being up here all night…
Anything to do with Liverpool I’m sure the engine was nicked rather than just packed up .
