“The Fareham-headquartered company currently has more than 12 vacancies for class one and class two drivers, based across its 27 operating sites nationally.”
That doesn’t seem to indicate a driver shortage to me, just the normal need to replace “employee churn”.

No way, man! They have free onsite parking as well. Throw in a free locker, a hi-viz vest and a pair of gloves and I’m in. I’ll relocate at my own expense if I need to. Oh wait they won’t take someone with no xp Yeah £26k a year, what was I thinking - that’s nearly a grand more than Amazon warehouse drones.
Seriously, anyone else offended by the list of “benefits” companies will come up with these days? (not just driving related offers). “A salary, online payslip, paid holiday, NI/pension contributions” - ehhh these are kind of basic and mandatory. “Hi I’m a great driver worthy of the second to none benefits your company has on offer; I have amazing skills: I can breathe, I can read and write, I can distinguish colors, I know how to operate a clutch pedal”
Way im reading it the fella is complaining about driver shortages.
Rather than increase wages tncs etc.
He Is more interested in saying the government has reduced the funding for aprentaship schemes etc.
In other words he’s been taking on aprentacships getting funding from.govermnet. but now it’s stoped he’s not making money from it now. No more cheap /funded labour for him
Mmm £26k for handling unmentionables etc , driving around domestic streets to sewage works or small factories , lugging heavy pipes around , But they have Scanny’s
or
Get paid similar for general haulage mostly easy , clean’ish work at your own pace
Not pushed to do max hours
OT paid 1 1/2 or 2 x on Sundays
And don’t have to drive a scannny
There isn’t a shortage of drivers, just a shortage of companies willing to pay a decent wage.

Can’t believe how cynical your being, the article says there is, the government funding to prisons says there is, and the adverts offering 45k show how desperate they are due to it…
I think for the chap in the article it could be due to the fact that maybe it’s the colour scheme of his wagons that’s putting folk off to be fair [emoji38][emoji38]

I agree with Biggriffen, there isn’t a shortage just a very small pot of decent companies to work for. If the new minimum wage comes in then for a 48 hour week it equates to £26k per annum.
I’ve been driving hgv 1 for 24 years & the pot of companies I strived to work for as in dead man’s shoes jobs is practically non existent now, even companies that had a draw full of applicants doesn’t exist.
The only good thing for me personally is my company has FINALLY started to recognise that it’s getting harder to recruit & retain good Driver’s so if you are of a decent standard you get looked after better.
“Just say ‘NO’ to Contractual abuse!”
The shortage - is of clean licence drivers working on agency - who won’t take the full time shilling 'cos it is lower pay than agency, and a loss of control over what hours one gets to work…
As a full timer, you might have to do “other non-driving duties” as part of your working week, which you might find “not-to-your-liking”. You’ll also be expected to work weekends/longer shifts/the wrong start times - whenever it suits the firm’s needs.
Just how many full timers actually took their job because they feared not getting that many hours on a regular basis on agency?
January this year on agency for me - was a classic example: I was expecting 1-2 shifts per week between the 2nd week of January and Valentine’s weekend - BUT I ended up doing around 50 hours per week over the six week period - which was the only period this year when I HAVE done that!
48 hours average per week - compare “being a full timer” to “being in on agency” at ANY yard you know… “Like-for-Like”…
I suggest that the number of yards out there where the full timer gets paid MORE than the agency for working those same hours - is dwindling away fast - but no one is talking about it, nor connecting it with any oncoming “driver shortage”…
I have applied online to two agencies recently advertising reasonably paid local jobs and not received a reply.
One states - apply now and you will be on the road in 24 hours - two weeks ago!
Second advertises ‘urgently required’ 10 days, no reply or acknowledgement.
Also there seems to be a new job description to get you to do absolutely anything. Description includes normal stuff but adds "but not restricted to. . "!

28K to haul other peoples ■■■■ about, there is no shortage.
When 2 bob outfits still pay sub £10 an hour and get drivers there clearly is no shortage, the shortage is the lack of decent employers who treat people properly and remunerate accordingly and who don’t suffer imbeciles, the only difference are rates away from major population centres or being daft enough to involve onesself in the for profit circus.
The quality jobs are out there they just need a bit of effort to find and a bit more effort when you’re in.
Hold on, I’ve just read the list of benefits, free parking there’s the clincher right there.

“Apply online” actually means “phone them up, and ask them what office you need to attend to sign up”.

The last two…
I signed up with did everything over the phone and internet.
To this day nearly four years later, I’ve never been to either one’s office.

The last agency that I worked for did exactly this .
They even found me via my online CV .
All done via email and a couple of phone calls , sent a code so they could do a licence check and we were off . They paid a very fair rate and always guaranteed minimum of 9 hrs per day .
I went from a two week holiday cover gig at one branch to doing relief driving for 6 months for the same company covering multiple branches , I was offered full time on two occasions but it didn’t fit in with my situation at the time .
The company was run by people that had been in transport for many years and my contact was an ex driver who had retired due to injury .

Correct plenty of drivers out there, they prefer to do other work as driving is such a ■■■■ poor paid job for all the ■■■■■■■■ and aggravation nowadays it aint worth doing for the money that’s why theres so much carnage bridge bashing etc every day most are just clowns and imports trying to do the job and not very well either.
If you work for a firm who’s office you’ve never actually visited - what happens when you don’t get paid one week, and you’ve got nowhere to go to chase that money owed to you■■?
“Contact Numbers” - tend to be non-geographic phone numbers or mobiles as well…

Oddly…
The firms that did mess me around with money (all those years ago) were the firms I’d been to, filled out the forms and done the ‘drivers test questions’ (lol)
So far I’ve had one little money (one days holiday pay) hiccup with one agency who rang me, apologised and set it straight that afternoon, then rang me again to check I’d seen the payment go through.
If I wasn’t paid, I’d be ringing, sending an email explaining that MCOL would be my next course of action and then filling out the MCOL forms online. No need to visit them personally at all.
