been a lgv class one driver 35 years seatbelts on local tipper work are uncomfortable and are distraction when they ratchet up and have to be released infact until they are made to work like car they should not be compulsory wearing of them
Welcome to trucknet fuse
Excuse my ignorance but I thought all 3 point seat belts were the same, in cars and trucks
If you get caught in a Tarmac quarry with no seatbelt on you get banned for the rest of the day plus the next working day. The same goes for talking on the CB radio. I havent been banned, yet, but I suppose a ban is inevitable
And they’ll expect you to retro fit a seat or lap belt into older trucks. Whats this country coming to?? Ive just come back from a holiday in Turkey where they are doing the job in old 6 wheeler Leyland Reivers (BMC). On way to airport in road works a turkish driver was tight rope walking along the rail of his body rolling up his sheet !! just like in our quarries a few years ago! Ive just spent £1150 having an electric transcover fitted to keep the little quarry hitlers happy. What next?? a breath test and licence check every day? My thought is "its my wagon and if I fall its my problem! "

The problem is too many don’t think that way. Instead they go with - “If I fall how much can I sue them for” - and we all suffer as a result.

and to keep the rest of the road users happy, two screens and three headlights last year cos tippers never covered their loads i thought it was law now
our quarry rules are anything less than 5 inch needs sheeting or a net and the sheet / net has to be operated from ground level which is not as easy as it sounds. If your load has been loaded too high or covered your sheet you have to climb up to sort it. The quarry would expect us to tip it off and reload it. Do we have time to do that ? No! Would you Ps the loader off? Yes! would you be 2 tonne over weight next time the p*sed of machine driver loaded you? Yes!!
Regarding broken headlights etc, I think 99 % of lost material comes from the gaps in the tail gate. once wear sets in the top hinges and bottom of the tail board and gaps appear the odd one will bounce out
A message to coffeeholic…
Im reading your book at the moment and Im seriously concerned about the level of caffine in your blood!!

Wrong way round. The bigger concern is the level of blood in my caffeine, don’t want that getting too high.
yes they are the same principal as car ,you must know that in a hgv to gain maximum awarenes and allround vision adegree of movment in the seat is required .i dont have a real problem on motorways but as i say on local work they are a nusance
I never wear a seat belt in the truck. It makes me drive too fast into corners.
Not sure if I think I’m in the car or I just feel safer when I wear it. (i.e. risk compensation)
I reckon seat belts in trucks are too blame for the apparent increase in rollovers.
3,000,000 miles and not even come close to needing one anyway
Came across a 2 truck accident a few years ago just north of Bakersfield Ca.The 1 truck had pulled out in front of a northbound truck the offending truck had the complete bonnet, chassis and engine ripped off but the cab was ok, the sad thing the driver was lay in the road with a tarp over him.The next days paper said that a seat belt would of saved him and i tend to agree, the force of the impact had thrown him out
I worked with a guy who had a Kamikaze motorist aim straight for him, he (my driver friend) went out through the window and was lucky to be alive.
The bloke in the car didn’t make it. (which was his intention) although I dunno if he wore a belt or not.
Just after I passed my HGV, I rolled a wagon, a 4 wheeler Sed Atk, I didn’t mess about at it, it was a 360 roll down an embankment (Don’t ask, inexperience, and being on the wrong road, is the short story) Luckily I was thrown into the passenger footwell, and crawled out of the foot high rearranged windscreen with cuts and bruises, I dread to think what would have happened if I’d been strapped into the seat. Not that seat belts were fitted in them days

in a quarry?
Never head that one before, although i can believe it.
I once got an ear full for talking on the mobile phone when i was parked up in one quarry ( i didnt see the harm in it as i wasnt moving )
he soon backed down when i jumped out of the cab and gave him a mouth full back lol.
i’ll always use the Cb radio in quarries as it makes communication to the shovel drivers easier.

The CB ban will come in. Tarmac sent me a snotty letter saying I must have auto sheet (no), auto tailgate (no), seatbelt fitted (no), reversing camera (er…experiencing malfunction! ) and that talking on mobile (fair enough) or cb (
) is no longer allowed whilst moving.
All to cover their own backs.
P.S. Let us know about your new toy, when it arrives.
