Seat belt law

Only been back driving after a gap of 8yrs. My 2006 8 legger tipper has a selt belt . Do I have to wear it by law . I am guessing it’s yes but any loopholes.
Thanks

you guess correctly

there is an exemption (i believe) for multi drop courier drivers who have lots of deliveries in a small area

unfortunately, normal tipper rules don’t apply to seatbelts

Yes you do . Whats the problem with lorry drivers wearing seat belts ffs?
Loopholes, you could try “it was rubbing on my bra strap officer”

Well it is true that you can recognise a truck driver not only by his suntanned right arm, but also by the hole on the right shoulder of his T-shirt.

Cheers fellas

Too fat for the belt to reach around?

Allergic to the fabric the belt is made from?

Merinthophobia- Fear of being bound or tied?

Must be many more but how many have plod heard I wonder?

You do realise I was on the bunk? No seatbelts fitted to the bunk and as a wise old TN member once posted, “If seatbelts are not fitted you don’t have to wear them.”

I believe you carry a doctor’s letter if you have an exemption so you can show it if you get pulled. We have at least one member on here who has such an exemption.

The other exemptions are that you do not have to wear them when reversing!

or

deliveries less than 50metres apart, milkman, newspapers mobile shop etc

Are you exempt if the bugger has stopped working? Mine has jammed in and have got to get a new fitted.

Why wouldn’t you want to wear it?

I believe you can only not wear it if you have a medical exemption certificate and/or youre a multidrop driver with delivered 50m or less apart.

That is the reason I don’t use this site anymore, a moderator condoning breaking the law, even if you are on the bunk the other driver should use at least 2 ratchet straps, what if you fell off and squashed him, does no one think of his children? Even the modern trucks are fitted with a cargo net to prevent heavy drivers falling off the bunk

Step 1, defect vehicle for broken seat belt
Step 2, wait for vehicle to be fixed or use a different vehicle

When I am on tippers I find the belt presses on my bladder. As a tipper driver I can stop anywhere for a pee between the wheels. If a belt is fitted you risk a £ 60. Fine and 3 points for not wearing the damned thing. If you want to pay another tax…

Just to give you the legal outline -

The law requires that drivers and passengers over the age of 14, in cars, vans and other commercial vehicles must wear a seat belt if one is available.
There are very few exemptions to this law, they are listed below;
Using a vehicle constructed or adapted for delivery or collection of goods or mail, while making deliveries or collections when travelling up to 50 metres (162 feet), between deliveries or collections.
While performing a manoeuvre that includes reversing.
Holding a valid doctors certificate indicating that it is inadvisable on medical grounds to wear one a certificate must be produced for inspection by any authorised officer.
These exemptions however, will not apply to drivers travelling from site to site or when travelling distances greater than 50 metres between collections, when a seat belt must be worn.

Simples :grimacing:

Our old Fodens (S and V reg vintage) had the belt buckles fixed to the cab floor and not the seatside: For certain drivers it meant having the belt close to their throat…

That would be a PG9 then! If you get caught of course :unamused:
