Seasonal Traction

I’ve had a couple of people ask me if I can provide traction to which I have said no.
But…I think it might be worth looking into.

Assuming I can get an O license, what is the position with regard to short term insurance, is this something which insurance companies will do? And how about the goods in transit insurance, who is responsible for this? I’m really thinking about the run up to the dreaded Christmas.

I would get my own GIT insurance - its not as expensive as you think.

Personally for 8 weeks I’d just tell them to hire a wagon and offer to drive it as self employed as you’re not going to get an O license quickly and you need to have several thousands of pounds of available funds to support the application.

Well I suppose you could get an o licence but you continually have to show 7 grand odd available funds for each motor you want to spec on the licence so you’d have to show that in the account all year. In practice you could just put it in for 3 months then take it out. You also need an operators Cpc qualification.

I don’t know if insurance co’s would insure you just for a couple of months per year.

Basically you’d need to be charging a fortune for those 2 months to make it worth the hastle.

Yes, I do agree with what you are saying and I think that you are right. It’s just that with an O License in place, it gives you the opportunity to spot hire and go out and do some work (now is a prime example) but the insurance is the hurdle.

Do most people do their GIT and road risks as separate policies, or rolled into one? Ours is separate, but the GIT is specialist cover for race cars and kit so not too clued up on how it works for general haulage- whats the legal requirement for GIT cover?

It will cost you more than you’ll make

Having said that, there was a firm im sure pushing pay as you go hgv insurance, the only one I’ve seen advertising it, try googling it, they’d probly charge you an arm & a leg though.

Basic GIT is fairly cheap for the year.

Cheers, will have a look.

Is GIT compulsory though and isnt there an amount something to do with the RHA?
