Were the Rowntrees pics taken at Halifax?
I understand that they were - Roger Kenney lived in Rochdale so not that far away.

Are those sort of greedy boards bolted or hinged? I’ve seen a few muck bodied tippers around with standard tipper plus a half body extension. I guess for hauling compost and green waste? I acknowledge the Clark wagon would be for grain, lime etc…

Yes, I believe the location is detailed in the book in which this picture appears. I remember spending a few hours identifying the location for additional information for the caption. It’s a great shot.

Definitely Halifax, the old Bailey Hall warehouse by the huge Mackintosh factory behind Halifax station. “Macks”,along with Crossleys Carpets, employed half of Halifax in their heyday.
Driving jobs at both these firms were"dead mens shoes"if you wanted one…no chance!!! Right into the 70s both firms ran trunks, the time allowed for these, being the same as when lorries carried 20MPH plates on the back!!!
Regards John

Hi Muckaway,
The sides are held in place by some posts you can see along the top one at each join and one in the middle of each side. The front one will have 2 posts in the middle and some brackets and pins in the corners to hold the first side.On the bottom of the body will be some brackets that the posts side into and the bits you see hook over the top.All you do to remove them is go inside and push the posts up. Don’t know if you saw a picture of mine a few pages back but thats how that worked and it looks the same to me.

Not now! But, with a quick bit of photoshop work, it will still find its way to Ebay!
I put this on the Jacques thread but it fits here also.

That’s good to know mate - I’m sure I drive round with my eyes shut these days
Hello again,The old J.E.Clarks pics stirred a few memories for a few of you and yes the Daf was parked opposite Harris’s factory in Calne. Heres a few more pics of the stuff they ran over the years.
This little LF Daf was the last lorry to join the fleet and is seen in the yard awaiting its fate lined up with the rest prior to being auctioned off…it was only a few months old when photographed.
Cheers Bubbs,
Did Clarks go bust? Seems a bit strange to buy a new motor then pack up?
bestbooties:
On one occasion when I was working for Brit European, there were two of us in Ankara with Volvo 290’s.
It was during the winter and extremely cold.
In the morning my mate,(Goldy) fired up with such a rattle, all the pushrods had bent and smashed the cam followers.
We towed her round to Volvo’s and they replaced everything the same day and we went back to the Telex ready to kick off the next morning.
Fired up the next morning, same thing again!
Did the usual m/e recovery, stripped both tilts down, topped the whole rig and took the front wheels off the tractor to kep the cab height under 4 metres, didn’t bother to chain the hanging axle up,just let it hang.
Drove back from Ankara, got on a ferry just saying our rig was 20 metres long, and landed in Dover.
Driving up the M1 turned some heads, and whe we pulled into Brits yard in Scholar Green all the garage staff came out as they couldn’t believe we had driven 2,000 miles like that.Unfortunately no one took a picture!
Couldn’t imagine trying to get through Germany like that today!
When my Scania 111 dropped a valve in Saudi when I worked for Expo Freight,a mate on Funstons, big Cliff, towed me on a straight bar for 1,000 miles back to the Oryx garage at Incerlic where we topped my rig onto his Globetrotter and he carried me back to Belgrade where we off loaded it so I could rebuild the engine with spares brought out from the UK by another of our drivers.
On a bar.
A road train?
Off loading at Belgrade railway station.
Cracking story Ian…can’t wait for the book
I ran with Cliff & that Globby on the Algerian run. After tipping Algar we ran Marsielles to Murcia for the reload. Cliff was going thru a divorce at the time & had conduct all the legal chat on payphones…in Algeria & France.
Hello lads, just in time before we end up on page 2,heres todays stuff
Cheers Bubbs,
Carryfast !!!
