Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Frankydobo:
I’ve just sent a bit on the Atkinson Twin Rear Steer but it hasn’t posted and I can’t be bothered to write it all again, extremely annoying! Anyway previous to the named models of 1970/71 seen below, the Black, Gold and Silver Knight Series of models had complicated number and letter designations, these were still in use for the later named models but as with most makes names are easier to recall, the Twin Rear Steer Tractor before 1970 was the Silver Knight RTS3266C meaning Rear Twin Steer tractor 32 Ton GCW 6 wheeled 6 cylinder ■■■■■■■ engine. The later TRS.3868XB also meant Twin Rear Steer 38 Ton GCW 6 wheeled 8 cylinder Gardner LXB engine, but as we know it the ‘Leader’. Diluted version of what I wrote before so hope it doesn’t confuse! Cheers Franky.

Thanks for the scan, Franky - I’d not seen that one before. A little note in my anorak pocket tells me that the 6x2 tractor is TRS, and it actually stands for ‘Tractor Rear Steer’. Any other 6-wheel unit would be double-drive by default, as there wasn’t a separate designation for a 6x4 unit, just the ‘T’ prefix. You’re spot on in your understanding of the model designations

Yeah your right mate, I wrote twin instead of tractor, I said it was confusing! One thing I noticed, it seems Atkinson didn’t produce a four wheel rigid in the 70/71 releases in a lighter weight, a book I have does mention the four wheel Raider but as you say it seems this never came to fruition, maybe the imminent take over by Seddon had some bearing on the models Atkinson released. Cheers Franky.

This is an interesting pic, its an Argosy built for the Aussie market and a particular favourite of mine. Whats one doing in Southampton?

Is it a left ■■■■■■, wouldn’t it be a right ■■■■■■ for the Aussie market?
Probably picking up a trailer off the boat from the US.

I presumed at the time that it belonged to the U.S. military - I was just on my way to work in Ocean Village when I spotted it

They did make some 4-wheelers, of course, but never actually applied the ‘Raider’ name that Frank came up with - badges weren’t made, nor brochures printed. The spec sheets just referrred to ‘4x2 haulage chassis’. I imagine that they were all built to order.

These are used by the American air bases in the Mildenhall & Lakenheath areas, they have replaced most of them now with Scanias. All on US plates & no limiters.

A long way from Suffolk then - I wonder, did they have any at the South Midlands bases? I still see American reg pick-ups on my route up to work every day, between Wantage and Oxford.

Yes the chaps who drive them from around here get down that way quite a bit,i have a mate who drives on there. They pull a lot of trailers out of Felixstowe docks from the boat, ex Germany & deliver to the US bases around the UK

AAFES is the US equivalent of the UK’s NAAFI and as has been said they supply the US bases in the UK.

Hi Marc, you do a good job boy!

I WONT “quote” a whole set of fotos as some people do and clog up the thread just to make a short comment about one foto…that does wind me up 'cos I’ve only got an AMSTRAD 1512 (circa 1980) and a dial up modem with limited download megabits PAYG limited monthly…DO YOU HEAR ME OUT THERE! It uses up peoples credit who really want to look in here…Oh! Sorry, where was I? Ah yes, what is that Entress motor, there didn’t seem to be a manuf. badge on it and i’ve not seen one before?

It was a Magirus Deutz, used to see them in South Wales when me and my Eric Poss, were there with Brady’s Octopus and trailer.I believe that for some reason Entress used to remove all the badges, even of the early F86s they ran.Must have been embarrased at running foreign motors in the mid/late 60’s so maybe thought that if the badges were removed they would pass for Atki’s and ERF’s ect.Cheers Bewick.

Hello Dennis, I was once told that Entress didn’t believe in advertising other firms products, don’t know if it was true or not but I do know those badges would be worth a good bit of money now. There must have been hundreds of them as they had a good sized fleet and ran for several years. Regards Haddy, Gt.Yarmouth.

Hi again, heres a few more.

This was Palmers Transport of Ecchinswell, near Newbury. The Sed-Ak hadn’t strayed far when I photographed it on the fairground in Newbury! I believe the fair operator is Pelham’s.

Did the Sed Atk have a 180 or a 240 LXB engine? Cheers Dennis.

Well done Bubbs i love this thread keep it going you deserve a gold Blue Peter badge :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

I’ve put this up already on Oxon thread, but some people on here might be interested in this D reg Maxiload which was ex Dukes of Chipping Norton and still in occasional use on a farm moving feed.

It replaced this AEC which has a natural sunroof fitted…

The old AEC sports model, was always the best Nathan

When I asked the owner if I could take the pics he said “have a look in the AEC if you like”. I didn’t climb in as I was frightened of falling through the floor  A few bits on there would be valuable to someone restoring one though.

Yeah know what your saying, hopefully someone will restore her. Great to see the old Dukes Commer and it still fires up, I noticed the screen wash was still working    .
