The William Hayes shot was taken in Major st. off dixon st outside the MEB offices in Wolverhampton, new lorries from B+W motors had a photo shot there or outside east park. The Vabis ended up with an F reg, the shot being 67/68.

Hiya,Glad the memories are coming back for some of you…nice shot of your 88 in the line up Boyzee,I’ve another shot of it somewhere so I’ll dig it out.
Todays stuff.
Us oldies may remember the old advertising campain which included the tune “A Double Diamond works wonders”…well it would have to work wonders to put this old BMC back together again …Another song which comes to mind is “Roll out the barrell”
Cheers Bubbs,
Excellent pic’s Marc, especially the smashed up BMC.If it was a car he hit I wouldn’t have wanted to be in it
Cheers Dave.
Bewick:
I remember the D & D 6 wheel Traders but I never saw any Dodge 6 wheelers!! You are a star Marc, you sure can "dig 'em out"Cheers Dennis.
C M Philpotts my last lorry driving boss had a brand new six wheeler Dodge tipper with a V8 in,he never kept it long,it was the most useless piece of crap ever built,it was on a P plate, about 1975.Cheers Dave.
I owned one of those Dave… bringing it all back now…the nightmares will start again…hope I can find the tablets
What was it you owned John,a Dodge six wheeler or a P plate .
Cheers Dave.
SadlyIt was the Dodge Dave, I would rather of had the P plate, it would have been cheaper and less trouble.
Another beer lorry come to grief.
Thought they would have let the anglia man have his door back.
Some more photos of bubbs old firm and bodyworks. Western Transport and Oldland bodyworks were part of the Bristol Industries Group which included many companies.
]Hi boys
well Marc you’ve done it again well done It amazes me how you come up with photos of trucks from all over the country How did you come by this one,Like Trevor H said earlier taken when new in Major st Wolverhampton Its one of the first that Ray Grocott brought and he ran it day and night. He then went on to buy Man and is now better known as Grocontinental.
Hi DD,Would you believe that the Scania Vabis pic plus about 15 others were just about to be slung into the dustbin,a pal of mine knew that this model of Scania is my favorite so he rescued them and let me have them …thank god he was there
I remember mr Strawbridge, didnt he have one dodgey eye? He had a white Sed Atk 400 if i remember rightly, he used to park in Galliford Rd in Maldon, just off The Causeway, and the one he had stollen was a 401 with a Gardner in it, cant remember if was an 300 8cyl or an Lyt.
Do you remember the ERF B series, that Fishers had, and later on didnt they have a Foden artic called The King Fisher?

That was our test route at B+W motors the Scania agents in Wolverhampton, the foreman or salesman would often stop there for a photo shoot as there was little traffic up there. I can remember gunning the first 140 unit up that road and was shocked by the acceleration. The name on the top of the service sheet for the Vabis 76 was Nellie Grocott ? the colour was a drab dark brown not as eye catching as their later colour scheme !
hiya,
Would Bowkers have got their Vabis’s via B&Ws Trev remember they had a couple of F reg jobs never got a proper drive in one though, i think off the pump and under a trailer was my “treat”.
thanks harry long retired.

Yes Harry but they also had a place in Manchester by then, we did get Bowkers in from time to time usually the dreaded 80’s with head gaskets blown, OCB—H I seem to remember was a frequent resident for pistons, liners,. cyl heads. We all used to scarper when we heard an 80 coming in with a misfire !

He did have a dodgy eye, and he did have a white sed atki, signwritten ‘STRAWBRIDGE TRANSPORT’ in red,
it was getting a bit rusty when he replaced with a green 401. I thought that had a Rolls Eagle in it.
He did park in Galliford Road for a while, I used to shunt trailers in a yard down there in 1975 with an old Seddon 32/4 unit, had to stick your head out of the window to breathe, as the cab used to fill up with exhaust fumes.
After changing hands a few times, CEVA now operate out of there, and I occasionally do a collection from the firm opposite for UK mail when the regular guy is off sick or on Hols, funny how things go round in circles
Fishers replaced an old Albion with the F7. Then they got the B series with a 250 ■■■■■■■ as well, a guy from Fambridge called Jack used to drive it
When Albert had his heart attack, a guy called Alex took over & wrote it off
They replaced it with another (i think it was re-cabbed) then they replaced it with a Foden Artic

Yes Harry, the first ones did come from B&W, and some Bowyer-cabbed Guy Invincibles were traded in against them. I had copies of the B&W invoices in the archives. The first ones that Bowker had were actually E-reg, though there were some on F plates too.
