Spot on Bubbs about the Silver roadways pic, just checked it against the Esso Lube 8 wheeler you have added and its the same even down to the rear axles.Cheers
same old roping and sheeting tripe i see , modern day drivers cant do it for two reasons , 1 , its not needed anymore ( its in the past where it belongs ) and 2 no one has any need to show them how to do it . what would you have them do spend more of thier hard earned cash learning to do something they will never need to do ■■ i dont get the fuss . its like having a go at someone because they cant hunt with a bow and arrow ffs.

we do it least once a week still & we guard our with bows & arrows also dogs & cross bows, We aim to do all types of general haulage not pick & choose the easy jobs but moving into the 21 century we do now nave some euroliners

Hang on mate its nowt to do with teaching newbys stuff they will never need its just pointing out the fact that when r/s was the norm no self respecting driver would go down the road with a load sheeted like that.

It’s great to see all the old pictures you’ve been posting. I’m off sick with a knackered back and this thread has gone a long way to stop me climbing the walls.
I love the pics of Febrys of Chipping Sodbury, my father and grandfather both drive used to drive for them and I still work with a chap who drove their only Maggie, he had it for 7 years. Would love to see any more of Febrys if you have any and if you got a pic of any of the Puritan Maid L reg Scania artics I’d love a glimpse of them. Mine was L245 MRC which I cut my class 1 teeth on.

Bowser,
I drove to and from Aldershot yesterday back to Northwich,I counted 9 roped and sheeted trailers/trucks going North and South on M6,Toll,M42,M40,M25,M3,perhaps its making a come back!!
Must of been my generation that you saw roped n sheeted because from what I see on the roads these days most cannot even snap straps down on a curtainsider so cannot imagine most roping n sheeting. Dont want to see them breaking a nail or getting sweat on …bet that causes a response…lol …Sorrry chaps only joking…

I went on the drivers CPC a few weeks ago for my 2nd 7 hours of bull.A small part of this tripe was how to tie a dolly ,but luckily for the tutor there were no hooks in the classroom cos i dont think he had a clue how to tie 1,he made an excuse that it had been years since he last did it,its something you dont forget

It would make a bit of sense for the straight 26 pallet loads of machine parts, building materials or non foodstuffs. Why drag a 14’ high box about half empty. The fuel savings would help the job along, no slashing empty trailers. although imagine asking for or expecting help from the DHL driver to help you wrap yer happings up
Its good to see the Coward Bros Guy on here LPJ 691D.My Dad had that motor brand new in 1966 when he worked for Cowards,i done many miles in that " noisey " motor when i was young.Dad got a new 1418 bonneted Merc in the same year, doing continental work with both lorries, hence the big tanks & T.I.R plate. He has still got pictures of both lorries & many others that he drove over the years,@ 81 this month he is still well into his lorries, but unlike his younger brother Tony Bradfield still running to Morocco,he only drives a car these days.Just told Dad that the picture is on here, complete with a dented wing & he claims that he was not guilty of that. Keep em coming Bubbs !

Hi Will, we had a lot of Guys just the same as that on BRS, IIRC the reg no’s were EVP 6–D , you’re right about the noise, they had 180 ■■■■■■■ with the air filter inside the cab ! A lot of the old hands wore ear plugs to drive them and often complained of Guy bad back!
Great pic of Smiths Guy Bubbs, I think TNUKs got more archive pics than head office I’m trying to work out where that pic was taken, I’m guessing Smiths Concrete at Hardwick or Bubbenhall as Smiths at Stanton didn’t have overhead shingle bins…
