Hello again, heres another dose of real old stuff, apologies if the things I’m putting on are too old…

That’s a rarity!!

Anyone know when Barton’s stopped road haulage/removals??

A post I put on the Southampton thread which may be of interest here!

Hi all

The office was pretty crowded today Jeremy Roberts , Alan(Swayze), Pat Scorey all came and half an hour later my brother brought my dad(92) in to see me!

Jeremy brought in these pics for me to share with you!

Following on from this pic

Here is a drivers cap badge

A really old pic W Cooper Junior of Romsey, somewhat politically incorrect I wonder what the PC brigade would think of this today!!!

Finally an old pic of Cupernham Lane/ Richmond Lane junction near Romsey 1903

I like the BRS wagon being saluted by the old timer with his half pint  Cant see that happening these days, more than likely get a two fingered salute

hiya,
Wish I’d a shilling for every mile i’ve done in one of those BRS Bristols, still got the two finger salute in the era of that picture though, never managed to blow up one of those old girls, as tough and dependable as old boots and quite a roomy cab for the time, i liked them was very surprised the private sector didn’t get hold of any, still a lot of them in preservation.
thanks harry long retired.

Cheers Phil.

Geoffo:

Going back over a few pages of this thread & spotted this.

Haven’t seen one of these for years, Volvo F12 Swiss style with an F7 cab.
As far as I can remember the F10/F12 cab was too wide for Swiss regs.

Been covered before here, official model name was the CH230 to denote Switzerland and the 2.30m width which was the maximum for many local roads there at the time, no sure if that regulation is still in place but looking around at trucks operated now I think not?

PS - that retouched brochure photo of the Hoveringham’s 8 legger is just brilliant

SCRAP BOOK MEMORY,S THIS PAGE WILL NEVER EVER DIE MOST EXCELLENT ,KEEP EM COMING LADS REGS ALAN

i been sent this photo of a foden have you or anyone else seen one like this, nearside door and mirror looks odd, bumper

Tate and Lyle also had eight specially built Foden ballast tractors with the window in the lower panel to run trailers from Huskisson Dock to the refinery, presumably to allow the driver a better view of the nearside during manoeuvering, the cabs were the same as the Eight Wheel tipper but not sure why the tipper would need this extra window! Franky.

Hi again, nice pics Phil…glad you can post pics again. ,heres some more old stuff.

Hope these are of interest,

Cheers Bubbs,

Can anyone tell me whether this firm became British Rayophane? Back in the 80s we used to take their stuff to the Azores :open_mouth: Unfortunately we only dropped it at Lisbon and it went by cargo ship from there :frowning:

Hi
No British cellophane got bought out and became courtaulds. British cellophane had 2factories, one at Bridgwater and this one where the picture was taken was Barrow in Furness, which shut down around 1991.

I could be wrong Stevie but I think British Cellophane was started by Courtaulds and was always a subsiduary.British Ray-o-phane was Belgium owned I believe and is still operating in Wigton ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■

Oh not sure then but it was definitely called Courtauld when it stopped trading in Barrow cos we took the pulp that was left to a courtaulds factory over Grimsby way.

Courtaulds was a big concern. They had British Celanese at Spondon,Derby and also British Cellophane at Barrow and Bridgwater as mentioned.Nearly all the solvents I picked up at at Spondon went to either Barrow or Bridgwater. They had a big place at Coventry as well.
The Nypro plant at Flixborough near Scunthorpe which had an explosion in 1973 made “caprolactum” which was shipped to Northern Ireland where Courtaulds had a factory manufacturing nylon - I think it was at Bangor but not certain.

The Nypro plant went off with a bang, not sure about Bangor :stuck_out_tongue:

I remember the PVC film manufacturer in Wigton as British Sidac, presumably from the French; The Société Industrielle de la Cellophane. I do remember the hill which often gave me some grief with a slack lift tank and an F7
