Hello,some tippers today.

Cheers Bubbs,

Great pics of the Longs AECs Bubb got anymore ?

bubbleman:
Hi again,ok heres a couple of Henry Longs and then two from the northeast for Frankie… and I bet old Harry Gill will remember this old firm too, them my stuff to finish off.

Look at the bend on the flatbed

Hope these are of interest.

Cheers Bubbs,

There was one firm local to you, Marc, that I hadn’t heard of until I saw some pics on Big Lorry Blog quite a while ago, and that’s Creedspeed, who were running sleeper-cabbed Mk.2 Atkinsons on continental work. Do you have any pics or any information about them, at all? Apart from some small low-res pics that were on BLB, I know nothing about them.

thanks
Chris

Hello Chris,
Creedspeed was run by Gerry Creed. He came to the firm I worked for about the late sixties driving tar tankers mainly six wheel Commer two strokes.
He had not driven lorries before and came out with me to get the hang of it. He was also then given my truck to drive that had a reconditioned engine in it.
When he left he went to work for Robert Armstrong who had a yard at Ironmould Lane Bristol. I went with him once on a night run to swop trailers at Wolverhampton. When Armstrong pulled out of Bristol he started up on his own as Creed Speed from the same yard. He must have had backing from someone.
Lost track of him when Creed Speed rapped up but I know he got into computers and a few years ago he took over Buglers coaches at Keynsham which he still runs.

Cheers Numbum Phil.

Oh yes you do!

But, a 32T 6x2 Mastiff tractor, 32 tons with a V8 Perkins and 180 ponies (not a patch on 150 or even 120 Gardner shire horses), well, as they say on East Enders (I understand), “You’re ‘avin’ a larf, mate”

Agreed, barely 6hp per ton but worse still all the torque of a rice pudding skin removing machine in that high revving V8. And its not like Scotlands flat like Norfolk or Holland.

Well you learn something every day!!! If I’d known you could have got 6X2 32 ton Mastiffs I would have had 2nd thoughts about buying 111’s I really would!!!Bewick.

They can’t have been around at 32 tons for very long, the 6bhp per ton came out not long after the mastiff. We had them at 24 tons and after 6LW powered 8 leggers the drivers loved them. I used to ride shotgun with one of the drivers on a Saturday and he liked it. They didn’t last very long though. There were 8 of these and after the first year only 6 were kept running the others were either waiting to go out or being repaired. One stood so long, facing downhill, that the trailer completely filled with water

Hello again, good Caddies pics John, keep it coming. …heres one of theirs from way back.

Cheers Bubbs,

HIya…that 88 is the first one in the UK it was restored to new by Volvo. it belongs to cibble now its grey and red.
I think you,ll find out its just a grill change (a few selftappers)notice the wipers that says early cab and no air intake
Also the wheels are early volvo. I could be wrong someone will know.
John

Re. The Steve Wall Constructor 8 wheeler. Steve Wall’s still going, now got 2xHanson liveried Volvo 8 wheelers,a Foden Alpha 8 wheeler and some Merc powder tankers in his new operating name of Oxford West Logistics. The Leyland belonged to his Dad, Harold, originally in ARC colours and based at Stanton Harcourt Pit until Cassington opened. Steve bought that when his dad got an ERF E10 on a G reg then Steve bought that when Harold got an M reg ERF EC11. Harolds past retirement age now but still drives one of Steves’ Volvos.
I noticed that the payload was 21.6 according to plate on the body; considerably more than 8 wheelers carry now…

I think they had to have been built (I think built, rather than registered) before 1 April 1973, didn’t they? That’s when any new motor with a 180 Gardner could be plated only for 30.5 tons instead of 32.

Here’s me thinking I was sounding genuine(I managed, just,to keep a straight face when I typed it) but it takes a better man than me to put one over on “H”!!! Dennis.

Hello again, not happy…clicked the wrong thing, lost all the posting…40 minutes wasted :unamused:

Heres todays stuff…again

Hope these are ok.

Cheers Bubbs,

Cheer up Marc, excellent bunch of pics once again.
Cheers Dave.

Brilliant pictures once again Bubbs, glad you persevered. Has the Seddon Atki on scrap (L85XAM) changed hands or was it on contract to the metal firm? Could be a spot the difference competition.

hiya,
Love the Scammell Marc would resurrect the old licence and venture out of retirement for a go in that beauty bet it’s a lot better than the old Scammell heavy haulers iv’e had to use in the long ago past wonder what sort of power pack/gearbox it’s got in her, anybody got any idea?? looks like ex-army to me is it??.

Hi Harry,
I had a go in one of those when they were assembling some of them at Guy motors for export, the particular one I went in had a 350 ■■■■■■■ and a back to front fuller 13 speed, I was told that all the gear positions were backwards because the stick went direct in the box instead of through a linkage. If you look you can see the cab is a Leyland g series a la Clydesdale/mastiff, and quite narrow for a big truck.

hiya,
Thanks for the info Trev, that combo will make for easier driving and the narrower cab will give a lot better visibility than in days of yore somehow did’nt think they would still be using the gate change which i hasten to add with loads of modesty that i was quite expert at but did remove the gate when i was hold of the handlebars

Hi there,me again,a mixed bag today

Hi Bubbleman, just reading through earlier pages from before I’d signed up. This Smiths unit was re-registered to a G-reg when Godfrey Smith discovered that the driver due to get it new was going on holiday-and didn’t want to pay for a months tax! Originally a Cat 350, ■■■■■■■ offered a free 500 engine to persuade Smiths to switch back to them from Cat motors. It’s trailer was known as “the barge/boat”.
Nathan.

That shot of one of Ernie’s dump trailers brought back some memories Truckfing!I used to pass them regularly parked on the hard shoulder of the M6 between J35 and 32—usually with a pool of oil under them! Our first to tractor units were Mastiffs (26 tonner ex Barton Townley and 28 tonner ex Hudson’s) they gave us excellent service apart from an initial problem with fuel starvation on the 28 which we quickly sorted.Dennis.
