Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

Hi again,Ok…let me try to explain how I see my photos, making the wrong choice of camera all those years ago and seeing these old pics I seeth with annoyance…little square prints that I either got to stand a mile back to get the whole lot in or I can get a good pic of the unit but the trailers chopped off, nowadays its completely different.I think 35 years after taking my first pic then I ought to be a bit better…let me show you what I mean.

See, the units ok but I had to chop the trailer off…in my eyes its a bad pic…a nice lorry spoilt

Again the pic is spoilt ,no back wheels.

When I get it all in its not too bad,but its all front no sides

The same with this 1,yes the subjects in all the pics are good, its my own judgement of how I took it…thats what I mean by crap.

If only I’d had the right camera then, all these gems are long gone.

Again a cracking lorry which I’d liked to have got better

Now this is what I’d call a decent picture,ok only took a few weeks ago…posing in the sunshine, loaded ready to go.

The reason I copyright my pics is there is a sh*tbag that gets on here and has put some of my pics on e-bay…its done purely to stop him doing it again,I hear he has a stall at Gaydon…I think I’ll disguss this with him.
I hope everybody understands where I’m coming from now.

Cheers Bubbs.

You can make all the excuses you like but I still think most people on here would disagree with you.

Keep em coming Marcus.Everything has improved over the years, lorries etc.Cameras too,so don`t be too hard on yourself.

Hi Marcus, I don’t think that you ever shown a BAD photo and when you eventually get near the bottom of the pile maybe you can show a couple of your old Blue Dart photos that I know you have squirelled away  . We are all glad to know that you had the foresight to carry a camera around with you and I am sure that we all regret not taking photos of all the differant lorries that we have driven our the years. I don’t know if you are aware but that D.A.F. from Davies Turner BCG 687R " Super Simon " used to be driven by Trucker Ash at one time in it’s life.
Now where was I  , oh yes Cannons Marsh lorry park  was it The Top Rank Suite, Mr Smiths or Mr Browns Club  where all the drivers used to go " Discotecking " about in the early seventies  . It’s a shame that you haven’t got any of Brian Priestner’s early lorries roped and sheeted on the Showering contract as I can remember a couple of bottles of Babycham going missing one night while on Cannons March :open_mouth: .

Regards Steve.

Hi Marc,

Along with everyone else Im thoroughly enjoying you pics.
I think we probably all look back on our earlier photos with a degree of disappointment.

I started in the late 70s with a Halina 110 camera that cost about 3 pounds, bought through my mum’s catalogue at 50p a week or something and when I got it and started taking pics I was very pleased…but, looking at the quality of those prints now you realise how shocking they are.
Taking the pic you had to stand that far away to get it all in, that most of the detail was lost anyway. Even trying to bring them up with a scanner now isnt the best.
Plus, the colour film of the day has aged over the years and deteriorated.

And, I seem to remember that developing was very expensive then, hence alot of us used to send our films of to Truprint in the mail hoping and praying that they would receive it, develop it and it would find its way back to us via Royal Mail two or three weeks later, which by and large it did.

So I think we are all in the same boat.

Anyway, the purpose of this rambling post, do you have any tipper pics of the period, ideally eight wheelers but any will be good.
Cheers
Mark

Superb pics, please keep them coming.

Hi Bubbleman and all - been catching up again and just as much pleasure and memory-jogging as ever. Lots of those Bristol locations are familiar from when I was a kid. All I ever wanted if we were in the area was a glass of orangeade and a sausage sandwich at Browns Tea Rooms, down by the swing bridge near ■■■■■■■■■■ Basin.
I guess you never managed to have a camera with you when Tone Vale Transport was around?

Hear hear!! If only we’d all had the foresight to take similar photos ourselves! Your pics are a wonderful reminder of motors and hauliers and times that so many of us remember. Absolutely top notch, and thank you for all your efforts in scanning and posting!!

As for the prat who is selling them on E-bay - does he know what a wheel key looks like?? Perhaps waving one in his direction night help him understand… Name and shame!!

Thanks for the info on the livestock Scania 110 bubbs mate.
I must also say that your pics are great mate,a snap shot of road haulage history that won’t ever be repeated. So yeah maybe you think they could have been at a better angle, but as I’ve read many times by the great truck photographer Peter Davies say ‘A bad truck photo is better than no photo’.
I always have my camera with me,because as I’ve heard you say Bubbs ‘You never know what you’ll see’. This is one of the things I love about taking truck photos, you never know what’s around the corner, but sadly if the truck’s at speed or your not quite quick enough you chop half of it off or it comes out a bit blured, but hey you got it. And if you dedicated enough you read the name on the door and track it down for a better shot.
I started taking pics in the mid 80’s,so your pics from the 70’s are brilliant mate, long may they keep coming.
Cheers Jamie

Mr Bubbs, your pics are GOLD, thanks for taking them and putting them on here.
As for what you call poor quality let me say i enjoy an old black and white picture of the period showing lorries in their working enviroment a bit more than a picture of a restored lorry today taken by a super-duper digital infra-red laser guided camera.
I do like pics of restored lorries but the older pics have a certain atmosphere

Charles

From how I remember it,we lived in black and white back then!

Hello,ok I back down a bit,if these old pics are making someone happy then I will put them on for a while longer…some real nice comments lads, thank you.

Right then RC2 asked for some 8 wheel tippers, not got many so these few will have to do for now, also intertype 7 wanted some Tone Vale pics, heres all I have…ok

Greadys from Weston-s-Mare at Westward Commercials ,Avonmouth.

Fresh out of the box,not a bad pic

Pearce’s of Potterne,near Devizes.

Another new motor at the time,at Kingswood Commercial Bodies,Bristol,…Mrs Bubbs worked here…she knows all about Edbro tipping gears etc…no she wasn’t on the spanners, she was in the office

F86 in Taunton Meat livery.

Then the same wagon gets a repaint in Tone Vale colours.

Same location as the last 2,but the driver gets a newer 86.

Not my shot ,but took by my good pal Adrian Cypher,A4 between Marlborough and Beckhampton.

Hope these are of interest.

Cheers Bubbs.

Hi Marc your pictures are great so as long as you are able too please share them with us

PS I know some good magicians well they are a bit rubbish really they only do one trick and that is making people disappear but they have never been able to make them re-appear again  :unamused:
cheers Johnnie

More old photos then

Mk 1 Buffalo outside Vitamealos,Keynsham.

Hope these bring back a few memories.

Great photos Bubbs, thanks for sharing them. The Leyland Buffalo reminds me of the my first brand new lorry, a Buffalo reg. MOU 266L
that i drove for Lucketts of Fareham. Unfortunately i dont have any photos.

The Henry Smithers photo also reminded me of my time at Smithers in Totton, Southampton.

That,s me on the right as you look at it.

Keep up the good work mate

Tony

Great pics, nice to see all the different colours unlike the modern plain white. Keep them coming I say.

Whilst looking at the couple of Henry Smithers (Southampton) Guys i thought i’d post theses

PS KEEP THEM COMING BUBS

Saw this old trader at a classic car show today,i wonder what firm owned it originally .
