I can see those making a come back, what happens if you run the lorry dry though can you pedal it to make some more gas?
Hope you dont mind BUBBS but here’s one or two I have.
These next ones were taken by the late Roger Kenny from a book I have of his.
And one I just found.(Someone will know them)

Hi Marc, thanks for putting this pic of Dukes first 38 tonner on the thread again
![]()
ASAIR this pic was a set up publicity shoot for CM or MT on the first day of the new weight regs in May 83![]()
The whole outfit was brand spanking new and was reputed to have cost £83,000 at the time. It also ‘allegedy’ brought an enquiry from Marks & Sparks to take on their frozen work from the UK to Ireland (North & South) and return just on the positioning of the photo shoot, apparently someone high up ‘Bod’ in M&S had seen the action and thought that Dukes where big enough and organised enough to go for it
![]()
The M&S contract never came to fruition thankfully, don’t really think they could have fulfilled the strict operating reqirements M&S had at the time

BTW the nameplate on the front on the grille on the drivers side, thats seems to have been blanked out in the pic, was ‘POPEYE’ and he had it from new but it very soon became a bit of a general use motor and I spent many a happy 8 hr ‘stopover’ in GIB 4177 on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night on Stranraer/Cairnryan docks waiting for the return load to come off the boat
![]()
![]()
Dukes paid a reduced rate for these stopover’s has they didn’t class them as a real night out
![]()
But they always paid you a bloody good rate for all the hours worked at the weeked so it all balanced out
![]()
Earnt some good money on Dukes and they were alright to work for whatever anybody says, would go back today if they were still around
but I’ve gotta say it was one of those companies that if your face fitted you were in there for life so my face must have fitted

Great too see this old photo. This firm was started by my greatuncle and carried on by his sons. I think they also had a TM tractor unit, but I doubt this would have survived as they tended to run everything into the groung and wreck it. The TM unit did a run to Germany with the F12 they had. The TM had to bring the F12 back on a low-loader as it had broken down!!! One of the jobs they had was with French Kier building the breakwater in Douglas with Atkinson Defenders and Foden S80’s
that little Foden wrecker in the last photo is still on the show circuit and going strong. whats more it still has the same coat of paint.
