Surely people did’nt take these things over the water, did they?? once did a trip to Glasgow in one, in those days about 200 miles from my then yard, what a pill, thought i’d been round the world, at least my Borderer was tested when i got back.

Good shots there mate. Did the driver of the KM sleep on the back shelf? I did it a couple of times in a KM, bloody uncomfortable.
cheers
John.
Hello John, It was my first trip overseas in that Bedford, your right there though bloody uncomfortable,I cut a sheet of ply
to at least make it a bit wider for sleeping, but that detroit engine made up for it in power, and the reason we had to use the bedford was the F88 was to high for the overhanging front of the stone crusher king pin.It weighed 28 ton and that detroit ■■■■■■ it down to marseille docks and a nice unit only trip back
Hello Dave
Must have been a fair old bit of kit with the Detroit mine had a Bedford lump in it. It was one of the first around the area I lived at the time, used to ■■■■ me off a bit drivers always wanted to get in it and have a look around, after driving old ERF’s / Mrk 5 AEC’s/ BMC’s it seemed like Rolls Royce to me. I was only a young lad and this was my first brand new truck, I thought I was the bogs dollocks with what seemed to me at the time like a big truck lol.

Can’t wait to see the flak coming your way from the Gardner fans on here Just think how fast it would have gone with a ‘proper’ Detroit in it and not just that small bus motor.I’d have fitted that F88 with an 8V92 and tried to make the trailer fit with a gas axe.

Yea i hear what ya saying Carryfast ,they only put them engines in less than a hundred of these KM modified body s,
The engine stuck out the back of the cab about 4 feet .The new big wide cab TM was soon to be introduced, and think the boss must have got a good deal on these units as he bought three of them.
As mentioned earlier Couldnt fault the engine for a 32 ton unit,Glad though to get my new F88 back after that trip.
Don’t think we will get a lot of flack from the Gardner boy’s hope not as I love them, ( the motors not the boy’s !!! ) ) As i don’t think a Gardener was a factory option in a KM Bedford.

It makes a change to see that now even some of the Gardner fans know a good motor when they see one :lol 7 Litre non turbo and still went better than an F88 nuf said
Don’t spoil another excellent thread that is an amazing collection of photos of every truck, engine gearbox and company. No one is knocking your precious Detroits but if you want to pull yourself off, why not start a Detroit thread.
Marc has shared his personal collection and not many people will have seen such a eclectic mix

hiya,
According to the man himself, he welcomes imput to the site, he has said same on many occasions and has thanked many of the postees for doing same, it does show that people are looking at things with interest and adding comments on things that they have memories of.

Hi Marc, I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and say thanks for posting all the great photos over the last four month’s.
I am afraid that I don’t know anything about Peterlea Trucking, I think that they might of started running Commie Block and Middle East sometime after I finished.
Although I had a P.M. from a TruckNet member called pils last month who worked for Peter King for about 13 years.
Pils lives on the Gold Coast here in Queensland and told me that Peter King now lives in Perth Western Australia.
He also mentioned that Mervyn King, who I think is some relation, suffered a massive stroke about two years ago. Mervyn I think, ran M.&C. Transport who did a lot of Middle East in the 1980s.
Hopefully, pils or jj72 ( Andy ) might know a bit more about this company.
B.T.W. Merry Christmas to you too Andy and give my regards to Dave.
Regards Steve.
Hello Steve,
What you state above is pretty much true. I worked for Mervyn as a fitter for many years, then continued to do work for him when i started my own company, i also done most of Peterlea’s work too. Yes, Mervyn had a massive stroke which has left him somewhat buggered. Peter King, who owned Peterlea Trucking, now has a demolition company in Australia. Pil’s ( Phil Kemp) who contacted you is now on route back to the UK as him and his wife miss the family too much. I actually met him for a couple of hours last week as they are travelling via cruise ship as Denise, the wife, is scared to fly. I live in Pattaya, Thailand, and they docked to re-stock at Lam Chabang which is just a few klms up the road from here. So we met up and had a few beers. Denise would NOT let me take Phil out for an hour to show him around here !!
Steve.
Hi Marcus, sorry that I missed your centenary celebrations as I only arrived back off my holidays last week and it has taken me ages catching up on all the posts that I have missed. Well done to you and I am sure that all your followers like myself are already looking forward to the next one hundred pages , so keep it up Mate.
Hi M.& C. Steve, I am sorry that I have only just noticed your post but we left here on the 19th March and flew to Singapore where we joined the P. & O. Arcadia and sailed to Southampton. As the Arcadia was in Thailand three days before I wonder if Pils was on the same ship with us at the same time . Maybe you could ask him the next time that you are in touch.
Regards Steve.

have to agree,i come on to see the photos of old trucks but when all you get is page after page of engine talk it makes you skip the thread which is a shame. start some engine talk only threads and that should satisfy everyone better.

Sorry if I upset you Wheelnut but it was only meant as a laugh which I’d have thought was plain to see from the context of my posts. But I thought that it would have been Bewick who put in a reply defending his precious Gardners against such sarcasm on my part But it would be a bit difficult to make a thread as good as this one concerning a type of truck/engine combination which was as almost as rare in Britain as a Gardner powered wagon was in the States at the time.

But surely a few comments about the wagons in the photos are ok?.

Don’t worry about it mate, it was a temporary moment after about 8 pints of Guinness
Some of the threads get a bit off topic occasionally and I am probably to blame occasionally when I rant on about speedway and motorbikes. The scrapbook is an important piece of this forum.
