3300 John… I was just thinking the same thing, also, was the wheelbase shorter on the Steer compared to the AEC Mammoth Minor?

It’s essentially a Freightline Beaver with a second steer. Either Bulwark or Ancliff ran one I think (there’s a picture of it coupled up to a tank trailer floating around t’internet somewhere) and I seem to recall that the fuel tank was at the back of the cab due to the lack of space between the drive axle and the second steer. It was significantly shorter than the Mammoth Minor.

[EDIT] Just looked again at the show pic and there’s the fuel tank across the back of the cab. I wonder how many fuel stops that made per journey when it was in service… :unamused:

The Leyland Freightline Steers had a wheelbase of 10ft compared to the 12ft 2 1/2ins of the Mammoth Minor, they also had lightweight front axles with 900.20 tyres and 10.00. 20’s on the rear. I have pics of Steers showing one to be in Bulwarks colours and the other all White including the triaxle tank trailer but close inspection shows the fleet number 917 to be the same, strange that the liveried Steer has no number plate yet the White Steer (presumed to be in its unpainted stage) has the reg GHR 755D!

One book also claims there were only threeSteers built but Leyland also exported a few longer wheelbase Steer’s to New Zealand with standard wheels all round and a Six speed with deep crawler manual box of 10 ratios as opposed to the Two Pedal semi-auto box in Britain, both having the P.680 engine.

These were built from 1966 and the one in the pic above has 1967 on the plate from the 67 motor show but as we know by 1968 the C&U Regs changed and 40 Footers came into use which meant three axle units were no longer required to achieve max weight 32 ton with 33ft Trailers and only the Tanker company’s really bought them as it suited their purposes and the stability was better. Hope this enlightens, Franky.
