Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

hiya,
Just had a look at Harry Nuttall’s of Heywood there Moomooland, see they took over Holdsworth of Rochdale the third and fourth pics show two of their motors both of which i drove for a short while in the early 60s the Thames Trader still in Holdsworth’s colours by the looks of it (green) reg no VDK 958 and the other the ERFin the foreground in pic 4 is 3778 DK looks like that is painted in Nutty’s colours, often wondered what happened to Holdsworth’s, canny little 4 motor outfit who always paid well and i enjoyed my spell there only left because i was young and had only driven much bigger stuff and wanted to get back amongst that work with a bit more variety.
thanks harry long retired.

Probably makes more sense as VH was West Yorkshire, (Huddersfield area) and KH was Hull but Thompsons supplied Dafs allover.

I think Brennan bought new and not used

“L” reg Marathon? that’s 1972 I had no idea they had been around so long!

I think that WTJ 120L was one of the pre-productionm Marathons, John. Pandoro had an early one, TTE 315M, that had come from Northern Ireland Trailers. I think George Dodd used to drive it.

I worked for Bill late 80s early 90s and all his tackle was pretty new under 5 years old then, I have known him from the late 60s when he was on S&R and was made redundant when he lost a big contract along with about 10 more lads.

I did not realize that the Marathon was out so soon after the Crusader was introduced as I can remember Pickfords having some 6x4s at Lincoln and Leicester depots there must have just been months between them being brought out in competition from the same parent company and we wonder why the British manufacturers went kaput :exclamation: I am glad I never had their brains

Isnt that the one that features in that cheesy Leyland promo film that follows “Southall the twighlight years” ?
■■■■ Rivers (Destination Doha) takes it down to Spain or is it Italy  loaded with whisky.

Hi again,I think that WTJ120L is still about.I’m sure a chap in Leominster has it,Robin Conon or something like that,Dave the renagade would know

More stuff from me.

Cheers Bubbs.

After a close look at that BMC Austin/Morris owned by Bishop and Sons (WLB267)it seems to have a sleeper /crew cab fitted thats novel, i’ve never seen that
cab before.

The Corbets Hay and Staw lorry is for sale on E bay at the moment 3.12.09.
John.

I think i must get a job it hard work looking at all these truck and pokeing my nose in.
That Foden (Think big) belongs to Lewis from Cuddington. I know one of the sons he has a stunning picture of about 20 trucks in a line in his car sales
office ill see if I can get it scaned.I think Tilcon had their sandpit on the A556 they had one pit oppersite that Oakwood restaurant where the greenhouses are.

hi there just joined this forum and what a revelation “scrap book memories” is all these pics and info should be archived or saved for the nation in some museum for posterity please do not lose them, brought back many memories for me although I did not drive lorries for a long time not like some of the old timers on this site but I spent a lot of time in school hollidays with my dad in whatever lorry he was driving at the time he seemed to change his job as many times as his pants but work was easy to get then in the 50s and 60s, your story of the french meat truck rolling over in islington was apt I grew up right near that accident and when I left school after working for a cousin who had a big breakers yard in hendon ended up becoming a butcher for many years when I got my class 1 when I was 21 but could not get a job any where because the old “no experience thing” god I was driving lorries and artics all the time at my cousins yard in my school days so I gave up for a while looking for a lorry job but there was a firm called city meats who ran a slaughterhouse in waltham abbey and I went there for a butchery job but as the boss knew a lot of my family who worked there on finding out I had a hgv he offered me a driving job which I of course jumped at we had an old guy big j6 6 wheeler fridge which actually went like stink but one night (this was a night job) I took a long bend to fast and forgot whaty a lot of old drivers at smithfield meat market told me whne the wagon leans over the hanging meat makes the centre of gravity all wrong well this guy must have been on 2 wheel because it kept leaning and leaning and my heart was of course in my mouthbut it did come back bit it was a good lesson tov learn , in those days no one really gave you any training not like now, love the odd shots of smithfield market you have shown brings tears to my eyes, I wonder if there are any Bedford TMs with the ■■■■■■■ engine in left or in preservation I drove an old one for a year in 1989 anfd it was a real flyer we had 2 on this small firm I worked for and I used to see another sister to ours normally at the woolwich ferry our regs were “egc” cannot recall the numbers but will look in my garage as I am sure there are a few tacho disc`s in there which I did not want anyone to see haha, anyway keep up the good work I am loving all the old pics

Yeah its funny how the odd one gets you, both here and on the 80s thread, You think you remember it all and then all of a sudden theres a place or a wagon or something that makes you go “oh gawd yeah I remember that” and its the first time you’ve thought about it for 20 years.
