Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

[quote="Basilbrush… There looks to be a lot of history sitting in Rush Greens yard, I’d like an hour wondering round there myself.

Hiya Basilbrush…I would’nt like to work one of your hours…it took me more than that to find the AEC and i’ve been there about
5 times before, to take that lot in you need a full day there’s so much to look at. if you google… maps…stevenage… then
look west of the A1 youll see rush green then zoom in a little and you can see how big the yard is…

Does anyone know the location of this view of an Adams Butter AEC Mk V photographed by Roger Kenney

Hello retriever, my first thoughts were that it could be Dantzic Street, Collyhurst, Manchester at the bottom of the picture so then I looked at Google Earth. I am having a bit of trouble transfering the image but it could of been taken on Bromley Street. Maybe John 3300 might know it  .

Found this by chance, not sure which depot it was taken could be Hoover at Cambuslang at a guess, anybody know?0

Hi All. What a fantastic thread. My thanks to Bubbleman and all the other posters. It has taken me weeks to work my way through all the pictures and discussions.

The Hoover picture was taken in the Merthyr factory sometime in the 60s. The Mercurys and this type of trailer were used for direct deliveries of white goods direct to the retailers. These guys could go out with 70 to 80 drops. This style of distribution finished in the late 60s when depots were established. The Merthyr fleet then turned to bulk haulage between the factories and the depots. Mercurys retired and Mandators and a 3 deck trailer were introduced, running at maxium weight.
I drove for them between !973 and 1979. In 1979 BRS took over the running of the bulk distribution.

Has anyone got any phoyos of the fleet as it was in the 70s?

Oops typo

Should have read photos. More pictures of the Hoover fleet of the 60s and earlier here.

The chimney in the background is the one at Boddingtons brewery nr strangeways prison and the MEN arena has is now, by the looks of it.And then you look at mushroommans photo and to the left of the tall chimney you can just make out the tower at the prison.certain of it.

Have now started building a dedicated Edward Beck & Son Ltd site which contains many never before seen images taken from 35mm slides kindly given to me by Teddy Beck.
Over the coming weeks and months more images will appear as the site is developed
Here is the link to the new site address… edwardbeck.webs.com/

Can’t see anyone going up the road with that, it must be just chucked over to keep it dry in the yard, sudden shower or something like that.

Deaneerrr… are those Big J’s ex Cartransport BRS, and did your bloke tack those sleepers on, here’s a picture of one like my Brother had, note the reg they had about 20 of them.

This picture of the Express Dairies AEC milk tank above has been scanned from ‘Views from the North’ and was taken by Roger Kenney and is copyright Roundoak Publishing. The vehicle was more in the distance when he took it and we blew the picture up as much as we could without softening it too much.

A great atmospheric shot.

Hello lads, heres more from the ABC guide

Cheers Bubbs,

Hello lads, heres more from the ABC guide

The ABC guide was my bible. In those days I was a real tramper. The boss loaded me from Nottingham at the weekend and I was expected to load myself around the country for the rest of the week and make him a profit. Me too, I got a percentage as well as wages.

I often used to ring Foulkes’, all of us preferred craned and forked work to handball, what a surprise.

And, of course Bassetts. I was once in their yard to pick up a load for London and I saw that it was roped and sheeted nice and tidily on one of their brand new shiny 40 footers. I had a brilliant idea, why couldn’t I drop my old trailer in their yard and tip theirs in London? I promise to load it straight back here Mr. Bassett. Reg looked down at me with a thoughtful expression, he wasn’t considering it, he was wondering how I could have the cheek to suggest such a thing.

‘No. Tranship.’ :frowning:
