Hi Marc,
I remember running with this fella and this truck on a few occasions when he was on his way down to the Middle East. If I am not mistake this is Peter Wall, a.k.a. Peter The Plater and no he wasn’t from the Stoke -on -Trent area.
Maybe M.and C. Jamie or G.S. Overland can confirm this.
Best regards Steve.
Hi another couple of old pics no information I’m afraid except it says Sparrow on the headboard is that the same as the cranehire people? The hotel is the Star and Garter at the end of the street nad is that Andover on the shop to the left?.
Regards Pat
Tribsa beat me to it on the Rotinoff. A bunch of these with Rolls petrol engines I think were sent to Oz probably in the 50s to pull cattle road trains for the Vesty company (UCC, Blue Star Line, Weddel Meats, Dewhirst butchers etc) in the Northern Territory. Never saw one myself when I was there but I understand that they weren’t a great success having overheating problems.
Yes Ainacs, that would be the same Sparrows as later became Sparrows Crane Hire Ltd. Based in Bath, with a depot in Bristol , they were also a very large heavy haulage contractor in the 1960s and '70s. Sparrows had a fine fleet of Scammells and were probably the largest heavy haulage contractor in the South of England.
Good photos of the old Highwayman of Sparrows Pat…you should start a new thread mate…Pats scrapbook!!
,heres a few old Scanias pal
Hope these are ok
Cheers Marc.

The boss of the Wild Group,Vic Wild,or “The Vicar” as he was known, bought the entire fleet of Sparrows in the early '70’s and bought all the motors up to Stoke.
He was considering having his own crane transport group based at the old “Mousetrap” transport cafe at Talke crossroads on the A34.He asked me to be traffic manager if it ever came about. It never happened and he disposed of the lot.
Hi Mushroomman. I was on the road in 1955 and recall the cafe, known as Motorways, very well. I can only recall using it on 1 or 2 occasions as it was too near home for me but, at that time I believe that it was owned by an elderly couple and was always a very busy place. It then, I believe, closed down for some time and for some years a very good snack van occupied the lay–by on the other side of the road to the north. After it re-opened I do remember that the owner had strong connections with the Clic charity and, yes, I also remember the trailers being parked in there and banners being spread across the frontage.
Regarding the connection with Baylis Transport. This is news to me. Fredk. Baylis and Sons Ltd. were, for many years based at Hambrook very near to what is now J1 of the M32. They were certainly well eststablished by 1955 as I was given a lift from Chiswick roundabout in an AEC Mercury of theirs one night when I broke down, probably about 1957. Baylis later became involved with Onward Transport of Leeds and moved to Pucklechurch Trading Estate where they still have large warehousing facilities. I think that maybe a relation owned the cafe but I do not believe that there was any actual connection. Maybe someone who used the cafe in the later days can provide more information.
OOPs. Wrong Forum.

They certainly are, Marc! Love to see the pics of real Atkis (as opposed to those contaminated by Seddon and Motor Panels…). Thanks for all your time spent scanning and posting

Excelent clippings Marc, Best thread on the truck net for nostalgia
Just love your pics bubbleman, and ainacs & dieseldog’s too. So glad you carried on, though I fear we lost Wagsie!! I am featuring a lot of these wagons in a model diorama I am building, based on the end of the '60s theme, showing road & rail traffic movements, so of course find them very useful as well as giving me a warm glow of nostalgia. As I think I have said before progress is very slow and now with winter almost gone, (well down here anyway) it will be even slower!!
Keep 'em coming kind sirs, they are just wonderful. Thank you.
