Probably early to mid 50’s for the Stanton motors pic Spardo, the ‘Big Bedfords’ seen on the left were introduced 1950 and the Atkinsons were 50’s models, couldn’t resize the photo to get a better look. 1962 Stanton Iron Works Co was merged with the Staveley Iron and Chemical Co to form Stanton and Staveley. Franky. Thanks Franky, I suppose I was in there regularly for several years from about 1965 and I thought the merger was after that, but perhaps that was because they didn’t change all the names immediately. As regards the Stanton fleet, I reckon it must have been drastically depleted after that photo was taken. There was a regular crowd of us loading daily in there mid 60s and I don’t remember a single Stanton driver.
I thought that Sisson and French did most of the Stanton haulage from Ilkeston but with trucks painted in Stanton livery?
Pete.

Not a name I know, so they must have been, although Sisson does ring a slight bell and French is what I speak half of my waking life now.

SPARDO IS THIS YOU IN YOUR FIRST JOB
Certainly not, I was much smarter than that. My first job after leaving college was as a male model. There is a photo somewhere if I can find it I will post it.
Well, it may not have been my first job, there were so many, as you know, that I sometimes get the running order mixed up. Labourer, sales clerk, Bible salesman, were just a few before I passed my test.

Difficult to say, there were preferable aspects of many different jobs and, of course the lack of comfort of earlier lorries detracted from some of those I might have chosen, as with all of us I think.
But if I was to pin it down, I would say Shaw’s of Stapleford before Charlie Dormer, and thus, Reg Cooper took over. I would load my LAD Dodge and 4 in line trailer (I did say there were drawbacks in all to one degree or another) out of Stanton either Saturday or Monday morning, deliver the pipes wherever, and then I roamed the country at my own free will loading from here to there as the whim, and the value (because I was on a percentage) took me, and that was rarely back home except until the weekend.
But I liked the kudos of a ‘real’ motor, my Atki at Midlands Storage, the 2 pedal ease of the Beaver at Bunny Hill, the slow plodding Highwayman at Ilkeston (but not the hours), the world wandering of my first ship which introduced me to Brazil (just after the military coup where I became accustomed to soldiers pointing machine guns at me) and Argentina (where I learned how an 8,000 ton freighter could steam 200 miles inland) and many more but mainly the freedom (the biggest word in my vocabulary) to go where I wanted and, with only slight reservations, when.
Which brings me to my last job, which wasn’t a job at all because I didn’t get paid for it, only expenses, and that was the 12 years after retirement with my canine (and sometimes feline and even porcine ) passengers wandering the extreme 4 corners of the European Union. I did love that.
Fremlins were a southern based brewer,so I guess the load is sacks of hops?

Yes indeed. The picture appears to be in Conduit Street (bottom of Quay Lane) in Faversham, Kent. The service bridge in the photo is still there. It was probably taken in the '50s or '60s judging by the S-type Bedford. Fremlins was taken over by Whitbread in the '70s IIRC. That particular site is now with Shepherd Neame. The lorry is carrying hop pockets.

Triang Toys made a model of the Macleans toothpaste ‘van’ and I remember having one.

Having a trawl through some old boxes of papers and photos, guess we all used to get these little notes from the boss, usually wrapped over your clocking in card!, with some helpful notes from a fellow driver… for a return load, can’t remember what the numbers were…fuel or miles
Hey Bubbs
Were you on the first phase of newsfast back in the 80s when it was all a bit hairy!
