Scrapbook Memories (Part 1)

The Scammell is a 1948 reg, IIRC It would have a Gardner 6 LW engine with a gate change gearbox, I dont know the model, Larry.
Not sure what Scammell you mean Larry but if its the Murray Hogg motor then its a Thornycroft Trident registered sometime between November 1959 to March 1960. Franky.

I put it on the wrong thread, Its the Whitbread 8 wheeler I was refering to, IIRC The Thorny was new to Elliots of Morpeth painted In Swinney Brothers Engineering colours also Morpeth, I was told that It then passed on to John Scott and was painted in Bass livery as they had the contract for the haulage of their Beer, Which was stored in one of the arches on Pottery Lane, It was driven by Freddie Ferrier at that time, Then Murray Hogg got it, Larry

Gardner J-Type Two Stroke Vertical Inline Multi-Cylinder Marine Oil Diesel Engine Range.

What are we looking at there?

It is a two stroke Gardner marine engine.

Yes Dave it is a Gardner 2 stroke marine engine, Used without a gearbox as the engine run both ways, Larry.

Gardner J-Type Two Stroke Vertical In-Line Multi-Cylinder Marine Oil Diesel Engine Range.

From 1928 to 1940 L.Gardner & Sons Ltd produced the Gardner J-Type two stroke marine oil diesel engines in vertical in-line 3,4,5,6,7 and 8-cylinder versions ranging from 50 BHP
to 400 bhp.

The largest engines ever made by Gardner was the 8-cylinder 8J9,which produced 400 BHP at 290 RPM,had a 12.5 inch bore and 15 inch stroke, net weight was 27-tons and 13
hundredweights and the completely installed engine with ancillary equipment and air bottles was nearly 33-tons! :exclamation:

Unfortunately,I cannot find a downloadable photograph of a 8J9 but I’ve managed to obtain a photograph of a 6J9

And here is a YouTube link of what could be the actual engine in the above photograph working doing a demonstration run - it doesn’t sound like a two stroke diesel engine :unamused: :open_mouth:
not at all like a Foden FD two stroke! … that’s because its a low revving engine.Actually,Foden two stroke engines sound mainly like a four stroke engine when their on
tickover…its only when you give them some revs that they produce the classic two stroke diesel engine music! :exclamation:

…you can’t really rev as such a Gardner J-Type two stroke oil engine because their inherently low revving.

Is that Scammell a 8x8?

Froggy55:
Is that Scammell a 8x8?

Or just very new, or painted, tyres? :unamused:
I reckon the cab was built under war time restrictions though. Was it?

Hubs don’t look like drive hubs?

It’s pre WWII, Rotherham ET registration went from December 1903 to October 1936, although the Rigid 8 was supposedly released in 1937 but that may not be written in stone. It’s just how the early cabs were built the Rigid 8 had barely changed apart from slight external cab changes until the release of the Routeman in 1960. It seems these were 8x2 layouts, even the Routeman didn’t become 8x4 until the MkIII with the rectangular headlights. Standard engine was the Gardner 6LW. Franky.

Pickins of Rotherham had the first two R8’s, and both ended up with Sid Harrison and were later re-cabbed with the standard style of Scammell cab. Both still exist, rumour had it that Peter Harrison intended to restore one of them after the two others that he’s already done.
