I loved those little Chieftains except that I would lie in bed at night and swear that I could still hear that four-pot knocking away beside me!

What year was new this truck ?

I bought this Albion off John McGuffie of Grange-over Sands and he had bought it off Brady’s of Barrow who in turn, apparently, had aquired it from a firm they had bought out in London,I think it had a London Reg. and was a 1966 “D” plate. It had an all Ali 20ft flat and what I would call a “cockney” headboard, but that is all I can tell you “Lilladan”,it was a coffee/brown colour IIRC when I got it and hadn’t been run by either Brady or McGuffie.Hope this answers your question.Cheers Bewick.

thanks for that , i remember around 12 years ago since when i spoke to a woman driver of a DFDS Scania in Scotland and she said her truck was a little underpowered for 44 tonne as it was only a 400 horse and so had only nine horse per tonne , so i told her of the Chieftain four with 94 horses for 18 ton total as an artic and so had five horse per ton , yet somehow they did the work

Hi lads.good stuff Keith, heres a few from me,Cheers Bubbs,

You still got the touch Marc, with the pics. Thinking of Glyn John. I haven’t seen Paul John ( don’t know if he’s related ) posting on these threads lately.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Marcus and Dave. I check in most days Dave but normally at work on my phone during lunch. Catch up on the weekends when I can at home.
Dave I am not related to Glyn John of Pontypridd, although tipped and loaded at many places with their drivers mostly Natural Gas Tubes from Tafarnaubach in Tredegar.
My family are from Rhymney and although my father ran vans and trucks all his life I think our fleet topped out at 6/7 motors. The last ones I remember a Leyland Terrier and A series Ford up to 7.5 ton, a Seddon 16/4 and A series ERF at 16 ton and F86 and F88 tractors with 4 trailers at 32 ton.
My older cousin was running the transport at that time but I think he packed it in around 1983/84. I left the business in 1979, just wanted to do my own thing.

I am still around trucks, been in transport in the States since 1994 but driving is secondary now. At the end of last year I took a fitting job with a Doosan distributor here in Orlando. We do have a low loader which I drive but it only carries 40000lb less than 20 ton. Suits me just fine.

Regards to all Paul.

Hi Paul,
Hadn’t noticed you on here lately, but when I checked your posts, I saw that you had been on here, but I hadn’t been looking at the threads that you posted on. Good that you still have contact with your old stamping ground in Wales.
Cheers Dave.
