It has to be Les Chilvers you are thinking about, from Heacham N.Norfolk. He has recently retired (after carrying on for a couple of years) from MDF of Yarmouth. You probably knew him when he drove for John Fairweather who had tidy sized fleet up till the early '90s.
Les is a top man and I’ve had a lot of nights out with him over the years and, as you say, allways telling jokes. Cheers Haddy Gt.Yarmouth.

Hi Harry,Falkland Road Services were indeed maroon at one time.I knew a couple of their drivers, the fleet was all rigid mostly AEC and they did a lot of work into Devon and Cornwall, multi drops. There is a picture in one of their maroon AEC Marshals in a Graham Edge or Peter Davies book. As far as I remember the founder of the company lived on Falkland Road Sheffield 11,but their yard was in the east end of Sheffield on Chelmsford Street,Attercliffe 9.
Here’s a black and white photo taken outside Hadfields steel works in the 1980 steel strike, you can take it from me the wagon was maroon then.
Hi all you peeps,I’m new on here and just looking at some of the old trucks and companies and wondered if anyone can remember the tipping company Haul Big from leicester area,I can remember seeing them coming through Loughborough town centre at all hours on the old A6 7days a week, not illegally I’m sure. They operated four in hand Fodens with twin axle crane 50 yard trailers, think if I remember the engines were 2strokes and sounded awesome.Anyone remember this outfit,Bugsy
Numbum:
A few from me before Photobucket becomes Photof***it.
Cheers Phil.
Hi Phil
Nice pic of the old Scammell. She looks fresh out of the box…
The driver was a man called Alfie Scammell who was based in Chipping Sodbury for a lot of years… As you can see from the pic he wore a beret and also, unfortunately, had a helluva twitch/tic - whatever you want to call it - which made him throw his head up and to one side every minute or two… He was christened Chuck Beret strangely enough…
Dave the Renegade:
Never saw any of these operating up this way, looks a strange setup to me.
Cheeers Dave.
IIRC G.E.Moore from near Carnforth bought about half a dozen Mastiff/Neville Dump Trailers in late69,early 70 and ran them out of the local Quarry’s,from what I used to see of them parked on the hard shoulder of the M6 with pools of oil etc.underneath they weren’t a roaring success ! “Truckfing” may have some photos of these motors when they were operating.Cheers Bewick.
I do have a picture of one of the Mastiffs somewhere Dennis but for the record there were 6 Mastiffs , 1 Dodge and 1 ERF on the single axle dump trailers and (I think) 1 ERF and 1 Atkinson on tandem axle bulk trailers that tipped in the same fashion.
