Just a question Marcus, have you any clippings on Wareham Transport (I think they were called) from Dorset. They ran some long wheelbase Ergo Octopus’s in the late 60’s/70’s,they used to stop at Durose cafe in Newcastle-U- Lyme. The motors had drop side ally bodies,I often used to wonder what they hauled, and not being a “nosey ■■■■■■■■ I never asked, but it was regular traffic whatever it was.Cheers Dennis.

Bender:

grumpy old man:

The Bedford VAL Chinese 6, I’ve driven one lots of times, I always thought they were OK (comfortable to drive). There was a choice of engines, Bedford and I THINK the other was a Leyland. Early 60’s I used to do a bit of part timing For Wallace Arnold in Leeds, regular job, over to Man. airport to meet the flights from Spain, back to the West Riding. Slave labour but it helped a young fella to pay his new mortgage

I remember those well, I had one like this when I was in short trousers:

the val was a lovely motor to drive the steering lock was fantastic the only problem was if you were parked in the kerb and put a good lock on to get round a vehicle in front the back end hung over the kerb if you were next to a road sign you could smash the rear side window, they had small wheels 16in and small brakes and suffered brake fade, they had 2 hand brakes a transmission brake worked by a umbrella type lever on the steering columb and a handbrake lever that worked on the front 4 wheels all of ours had a telma fitted so we didn’t suffer brake fade . You are right about the engines the early val(14) had the leyland the later val (70) had the bedford466.

Daibootsy…the front end of that Trader looks like a well fed Barbary Ape.
Cracking photo’s by-the-way.

The trader looks to be running on bigger than standard tyres ?
