Scottish Middle East Hauliers

Does any Middle East Drivers recognise where or have parked
where this Rab Doig’s Winton Transport Scania Photograph was taken.

Is there any Ex Middle East Drivers on here that remember this
1979 Scammell running to the M/E ■■
I was asked this question a few months ago but I had never seen it.
It is pulling one of George Pettigrew’s Newbridge Tilts.

Thx Robert your a mine of information>
Will pass that info onto the guy that keeps asking me about him.

I think this is a photograph of Frank White’s Iveco.
When Frank started back doing Russia.
A member on here may have more info.

Interesting topic, great read. I am certain Geordie Scott was on Heritage at the back end of the 90’s driving a Richard Darling Volvo. Can anybody confirm?
If it is the same man he was a smashing bloke who I could spend hours chatting to. I hope he’s still enjoying his retirement and wish him all the best.

Colinr, I think that is correct. The last time I spoke to him was down in Northwich when he was driving a wagon and drag for Chris Hughes pulling for Westerman. Was a late start the next morning as you would expect!!

Myself and Dave Purvis on way back from Uzbekistan and I think 1996 . Photo was taking by Russanglia driver Mr Wakefield on the way from Chelyabinsk to Samara. Seems a lifetime ago and Dave was driving a Eurotech giving to Frank free because of the problems with the Eurostar!!

I often wonder if Frank regretted getting into Middle East Transport
and wished he had stuck to operating his coaches ■■
Or did he enjoy the adventure.

I don’t know if Frank White regretted getting into Middle East transport but a few Companies and Owner Drivers wish they had never got involved in Middle East work unless they had there own direct contracts and not Subbing for the Shipping Companies and Transport Companies that specialised in subbing out Middle East Work.

Hi Just wondering if anybody has any pictures or stories about Scottish hauliers who ran the Middle East job in 70s and 80s.
ie Frankie White Transport Midlothian
Rab Doig Tranent owner driver
George Henderson Tranent owner driver
Scomo transport Musselburgh
or any others.
Cheers Al

There was a picture posted on here quite a while ago of a trailer belonging to a scottish m/e haulier. Cant for the life of me remember the name but the trailer was quite distinctive, white sign written tilt with quite a few names on it IIRC,and a very vivid green paint job on the trailer body and instead of a single belly tank it had extra fuel tanks under the outer sill of the trailer. i remeber seeing it in Dover in the 8o`s.

Appartently the guy used to do North Africa as well as M/E.

Some of the old M/E hands from on here recognised and identified it…im sure that if one of our resident picture wizards or 80`s archivists reads this then it may jog a memory or to and they can point you in the right direction.

Sorry i cant be of more help but im sure someone else will.

I only know off one driver that worked for Frankie Wright, that was Geordie Scott went to Dalkeith for a long stint then did some Westerman drawbar work for C J Hughes at St Boswells. Now drive for Matt McLanachan. But he never had a camera.

Rab Doig is now driving for D Steven of Wick doing lambs last I heard, have 1 or 2 photos of his

Dont know what or very much about George Henderson, but will ask around.
Brian

Hi thanks for that Brian
george henderson used to have a scania 141 six legger and used to park up at macmerry ind est pulling various tilts i think may be whittle international trailers running to eastern block this would be in the 80s and he had a 3300 daf and a old maggie at one time they never had names on them. Also the other company from musselburgh was eskside international they were orange 3300 dafs. Any info?
Cheers Al

Hi Al, George Henderson came from the Tranent or Macmerry area and had a Ford Transcon at one time. He was involved in a fatal accident in hungary and was under house arrest there for several months before his case came to trial. He was often to be seen with a tacho disc in his hand hitching a lift into budapest before his trial. if i recall he was sentenced to three years for leaving the scene of the accident. After his release he continuid to run abroad and i met him on a few occasions in the old commie block. I have not heard of him for several years now.
There was a company in Musselburgh called SCOMO that done a lot of middle east one of their drivers was Alex Peat who had been with the company for years. He later bought a TM Bedford with a ■■■■■■■ engine and was pulling for George Hammonds on the Kharg water contract near Baghdad. On one trip he was taken ill at Mosul and two of Duncan MacCrae’s drivers had to give blood at the hospital before they would operate on Alex. I later assistedAlex with his release from hospital and saw him on his way to Baghdad. He later flew home and i have not heard of him since.
I think that Eskside International was a lad called Tom Alston He also worked for Scomo for a while and Broxburn Machinery and later i think with Swans…

I worked for Frank White of Polton Mill for a few years in the seventies. Where we subbed for Astrans, Davies Turner, Redfearns, Z&B and many more running to the middle east. At the time of the revolution in Iran he was running fifteen trucks on M/E work and i think there were about nine impounded in Davies Turners compound in Iran awaiting customs clearance to tip. These were later recovered apart from a couple of trailers. Frank flew out with some drivers and drove them home after the Hostilities. Regards Jamie.

A Scot Lost in the Valley’s.

I have in my possession a report from a guy named C.Davies, who, sometime during 1975 travelled with a driver from John McNeil Transport,Moss Street,Glasgow to Tehran.

It is a report that would outline the aspects of middle east transport from the UK,with a view to producing a handbook for M/E drivers and operators published by Ailsa Trucks.

Quote-“Generally the brief is to observe. To go without preconceived ideas.
To collect facts that will be useful to operators and to drivers abroad. To collect experience of the F88 on such a journey-both mechanical and comfort aspects to be considered.
Finally to produce a report of use to Ailsa and operators of TIR vehicles.”

The document goes on to list the various visa’s and documents needed for such a trip,as well as various vaccinations recommended against for example,Smallpox.

It then continues as a sort of diary, with a ferry crossing from Felixstowe to Zeebrugge with TFS (Transport Ferry Service) ending in Tehran 14 days later.
Unfortunately,no driver’s names are given, referring instead to just an initial.

Sure that i read an article in an old Commercial about Spiers and Hartwell
Glasgow depot doing M/E in Fiat 619s

Didn’t know S and H had a depot in Glasgow, but their motors did do M/E.
The only driver I got to know was Tony Perkins.
There was an O/D who worked for them that had a FIAT 619,bought from the FIAT agent I used to work for. Can’t remember his name, but his truck reg was
■■? 1R.

Hi Jamie
Thanks for that info on george.I remember reading about george being under house arrest in the local paper at the time dont know what year that would be but remember seeing the scania 141 six legger sitting at macmerry industrial estate in 1989 or early 90s this had super singles fitted to the drive axle and tag alxe instead of dual wheels it quite a nice looking truck. But ive not seen george for about six years the last time was when we were fueling up together at tranent he was working for someone down south he was some guy i think he would drive anywhere in any truck. Just one of those people with a sense of adventure.
Cheers Al
