Can anyone tell me if the screw(wynd) up curtain tensioners can be changed to more traditional ratchet(lever) tensioners as the ones on the two trailers i pull are seized
im sure you drill and bolt tensioners on instead, although smitz wouldnt be my trailer of choice.
Iv never been a curtain man maselfso i wouldnt know a good euroliner from another but we got an sdc and its a ■■■■■■■■■■■■■ snd 1 vanhool with the same curtain tensioners as the schmitz
I too think Schmitz are a bag of crap, but if you want new ratchets, give these lads a call

Everyone’s different but SDC or Montracon would be my preferred curtainside trailer. As suggested removing the m is a more accurate description for Schmitz.
Big selection of tensioners here:

TTC stuff available most commercial parts factors.
Might find original is welded on and will need carefully grinding off to avoid having to make any new bracketry. Probably need grinding off still even if bolted originally.
I’m a big fan of montracon as well.

Montracon are a good British make, myself I prefer some of the better foreign stuff. Van Hool. Trailor and BURG / Hobur although when I was on mainly UK stuff, we had a nice pair of Don Bur trailers delivered
yes they can, we had a couple that siezed up, so we changed them to ratchets.
i prefer the wind up ones though. but so do the immigrants.
We run a Schmitz euroliner with those wind up tensioners and i dont rate them at all. Much prefer the ratchet style at both ends of the trailer.
The trailer isnt too bad, not as good as the 2 SDC trailers we run though, really like them. Also the ‘customer’ service from Schmitz wasn’t/isn’t very good, had a few problems when we first got it.
■■■■■■ the wind up tensioner is a pain, we put some new curtains on one a few years ago and the trouble was the new curtains were a couple of inch too long which wouldnt have been a problem on a SDC or Montracon but on the ■■■■■ the channel the pole sits in was very shallow and there was no space for the curtain to wrap round without jamming the pole to the channel then you couldnt get it out. Just think they are a crap thought out thing compared to the sdc, montracon.
yes you can change the tensioners to the ratchet type the company i am a fitter for run 30 schmitz euroliners n to be fair they are quite good trls they never stop only for there six weekly inspections they are nearly allways loaded to the max n cover alot of miles runnin to italy germany spain like any other trl they need the brake pads changein discs etc but wat trl doesnt they are good to work on the worst trls we have is krone they are proper crap
