Scanning 35mm photos

Guys,

Bit off topic here but I would be pleased to hear your opinions.

For space reasons Im about to start scanning some of my 6"x4" 35mm photo prints, to store electronically.

I’m told that scanning at 300dpi will be adequate, if I want to re-print the photo at a later date (at original 6"x4" size).

Has anybody done similar and if so what have you found to be the best resolution to scan at?

Cheers
Mark

I’ve scanned literally thousands Mark & if you can do it, I’d scan at a higher resolution than 300dpi.

It’s been a while since I did any, but I recall that I did the vast majority at 600dpi.

The higher the resolution you use the longer it takes to scan each one so if you have hundreds to do you could end up married to the scanner. Many scanners also give a scan that is darker than the original photo so you have to put them through photoshop or similar to brighten them up . At the same time you can erase lamposts that are growing out the roof of the cab if they are against a plain sky and look stupid.

Phil.

I gave up scanning fotos, just take a digital foto of the print, on macro if you have to but you have to be careful of shaddows. Its quick and will give just as good as a result if not better as you can select the resolution that you require on the camera.
