Scania’s young european truck driver competition returns for 2010
— A top prize of a Scania R-series truck awaits the overall winner as Europe’s largest truck driving competition returns once more
The challenge to find the UK’s top young truck driver is on once again as Scania’s Young European Truck Driver competition returns for a fourth time in 2010. The reward for the ultimate winner of the UK-leg of the event will be a place at the competition’s European Final, to be held in Sweden over the weekend of 8-9 October 2010. There, he or she will compete against fellow drivers from 24 other European countries for the ultimate prize of a Scania R-series truck.
In order to represent the UK at the European Final, the winning contestant will have to thoroughly prove their driving and road safety skills through a series of rigorous theory and practical tests as the competition progresses.
The process begins with registration, which must be completed by 31 May. All young C+E licence holders born in 1975 or later who are citizens of the European Union and are employed full-time in the UK as an LGV driver are invited to register and enter online at scania.co.uk/yetd
Once registered, entrants complete a multiple-choice driving and road safety theory test. The highest scoring 11 contestants in this phase of the competition will then go forward to the UK National Final at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire on Saturday 26 June, where a series of practical and theory exercises will put their driving and road safety skills to the test. The finalists will be joined at the event by a 12th contestant, William Herron, who as the reigning Young UK Truck Driver automatically qualifies for entry into this year’s competition.
The overall winner of the UK National Final will then be invited to travel to the home of Scania in Södertälje, Sweden to participate in the European Final of the competition, which is where the overall prize of a new Scania R-series truck will be awarded.
“As well as many valuable prizes to be won, the Young European Truck Driver competition gives contestants an ideal opportunity to focus on improving and developing their driving and road safety skills,” comments Hans-Christer Holgersson, Managing Director of Scania (Great Britain) Limited. “Scania has a long-held interest in promoting road safety issues and I would therefore recommend and encourage every eligible LGV driver to participate in the competition.”
