Has anyone had this problem with an R500 Scania with Manual Box? Sometimes, when you press the clutch to change up, instead of ‘running on’ freely the unit brakes a little and if you’re loaded you lose momentum.Dosen’t always happen.Feels weird ! Could it be something to do with the ‘anti clutch wear’ program?
Drove one for about a week when i was on at gregorys, i just found it an un-natural truck to drive, everything felt wierd about it, but then that could be my dislike to scannys’ no offence to all you scanny lovers.
could it be a fault on the retarder?
i have a retarder on my 470 and occassionally have a similar problem when slowing down for bends etc. as i accelerate out of the bend i find the retarder takes a fraction of a second to react to careful acceleration, if i remove my foot completely from the clutch pedal the retarder quickly switches off or i can put my foot hard down but if the road is slippy this can lead to sudden wheelspin even when loaded, traction control takes over but i have already reacted myself by then anyway.
it may be that you are not releasing the clutch fully, put in a defect report for it, it may cause an accident sometime and that way you are covered.
Yea, if you have had the retarder set at say 40mph, but then you accelerate to anything above that, when you press the clutch the retarder will try to hold its last programmed speed.
But scania have also changed the software that works the retarder. On earlier R series trucks, the retarder was set by the driver by either pressing the brake pedal or the switch on the steering wheel, and that was it - retarder was set at that speed until it was cancelled or reset by the driver. On the later R series, you can actually set the retarder to anything between 2mph above the cruise control speed and 65mph. So even whilst only doing 30mph, you can set the retarder to 50mph ready for the bit of dualcarriageway that you know is approaching.
i would say it was the retarder as well make sure its not on by one notch on the lever that would make it do the same as your telling us
some lorries have a brake on gearbox.
there is by some MAN a button in front of clutchpedal.if you tuch it full down you feel a slowing down of speed.just finish touching down a little earlier if it’s somethings
ITS A SCANIA…what more do you expect…dont expect to get in one of these vehicles and have a worry free day…
Thanks to all except the one who criticises Scania ! We love our Scanias here. Not a word to be said against them, from the humble 111 to the R530.Yes it is the retarder.Last night the Retarder Icon came on while I was changing up and the Brake Lights came on ! It dosen’t happen all the time and I think it can be defeated by clever use of the clutch and accelelator. But I shouldn’t have to do it ! I’m interested in the possibility of it being possible to ‘program’ it out through software.I know that if I go to the dealer here and ask about reprogramming they’ll think I’m ‘acting above my station’.After all what would a ‘thick’ truck driver know about programming and software and all that…just drive and leave the thinking to us…ok driver ?

the same can be said for every make of truck at sometime, they have not yet made the perfect faultless truck and probably never will either.
there will always be something wrong with a truck for some drivers, like the bed at the front or the back scenario, some drivers love it and others hate it.
i have very little trouble or complaint about my own scania, it’s almost perfect.
Just one more thing. The retarder lever is DEFINITELY fully up when this happens.Surely if I have ‘told’ the truck that I dont need a retarder then the retarder shouldn’t come on.By the way the last truck,a Scania 164 480 did this sometimes too but very seldom and it wasn’t a problem really. My boss says it’s a Scania thing. But surely it’s not right.I look forward to all replies and thanks again.

You’re dead right there Johny.
I’m not overkeen on DAFs, can take or leave Scanias, quite like MAN, but I wouldn’t have a bad word said about Mercedes-Benz or Volvo.
And there are loads of people who would say I’m mad (probably North Surrey Haulage would be the first )
WE are all different, so the trucks we drive need to be.
Night runner, sounds as if it is a retarder fault of some sort to me. Think you should really get it into a dealer. If they say you are ‘thinking above your station’, just remind them that you are the customer and to just fix the wagon!
Although in my experience of Scania dealers, they are very good. Ours wouldn’t say that to you, anyway.
Good luck

Take it to your dealer, if there is a problem
Thats what we are here for!!!
Ask them if this number technical information report applies to your truck as it does discribe your fault
Quote them - TI 10-04 11 17
I basically states that there has been a few instances of the retarder staying on after retarder braking has finished and a new proportional valve is required
If they are not helpful or rude speak to the manager!!! Or go to another dealer
Hope this helps
Hey, Truckyboy,
I’ve had the same Scania for 7 years and i’ll be very sorry to se it go…
Get new XF Space Cab on Oct 1st though…
