Scania P cab gearbox

What type of gear box does a modern Scania use and what would the layout be on a manual box. The last Scania I drove was the one before the R series (144 maybe). I hated that gear box, 3 speed with range change and splitter which I only very occasionally drove and never got used to. Please tell me they are better now.

Could be the same but more likely dependant on what the cab is attached to.

A 4 or 6 wheeler rigid will likely have a standard 4 over 4 range changer arrangement with no splitter, chances are probably 50/50 on an eight wheeler and likely to be the 3 over 3 spiltter & range change on an artic.

Its an artic, failed an assessment in a 3 speed about 6 or 7 years ago and never got on with them since, still have nightmares about it. Should be no different to a 4 over 4 but I am conditioned it seems.

If it’s a “modern” Scania,it’ll no doubt come with the Opticruise gearbox, either 3 or 2 pedal arrangement, both self shifters, just that the 3 pedal one needs you to use the clutch to engage gear from rest and when coming to rest, but in between it simply changes gear itself. The 2 pedal arrangement is like all the other autos on the market.

The manual you have nightmares about is simply a 6 speed gearbox with a split to each gear, just that you have to take the box through the range change to get from gear 3 upto gears 4 to 6.

Hope that helps a bit!

The Scania 3 over 3 with splitter is an 'orrible piece of kit after being used to a 4 over 4.
It is however marginally better than the Volvo version ( in my opinion ). :unamused:
Eventually you get used to it!

April 2005 was the date of my one and only failed assessment, found the topic I stated on here all them years back. Hope it’s one of those opti things then.

Never had any issues with the 3 over 3 split in a Scania, got used to it inside about 20 minutes,it made a terrific crunch though if you dropped out of high range coming to a stop when it was cold??

Volvo 3 over 3 was a good box too, different “H” pattern, but just as easy to use.

Opticruise is simplicity itself, and it lets you have some involvement in the process if it has the clutch pedal, also has the “Performance” function on the selector, that makes the gearbox hold onto gears a touch longer and goes through each gear in turn for a touch better acceleration,i use this when i’m loaded as it makes for slightly less “stuttering” progress in “economy” mode.

The 3 over 3 box took me some getting used to after a 4 over 4, in fact I didn’t like it until I drove a 4 over 4 again briefly and then it clicked.

If they have taken a Scania from Andover then it will be a 4 over 4.

There are a couple of 3 over 3 but they are on the bigger trunk run units.

p.s - change gear at 1500 rpm. The assessor will love you for it!

Thank you, there is a god after all

Normally 4 over 4

I drive the 3 over 3 with splitter configuration quite often and can’t say I have ever had a problem, it’s better when warm and I can’t hit forth while down gearing but you use the splitter and get one either side and its fine.

I also drive the new man auto, I did today, and although fairly smooth and great on big roads, I do find myself changing it up or down on the stalk before I get to a hill so I don’t loose to much speed, it’s also the same in quarry’s when climbing the steep hills, the last thing you want it to do is change gear on a slippy stone track or you will soon be going backwards!

The only other niggle with the auto box is that you need to see into the future on roundabouts or you will never get off the mark, they are too slow!

All in all I prefer a scania manual for the reasons stated above, if I was solely on motorway work maybe I would think differently.

I have never tried an I-shift, maybe that would sway me also the way people rave about them.
