Scania opticruise

Just back from two weeks off and my motor is now selecting 4th as start up gear, I’ve tried to change it back to 2nd but its not working! 11 plate Scania R440.
Any ideas? Cheers

Where I work has a p380 tipper with opti cruise and clutch pedal it’s bloody useless don’t think they should put autos in tippers and roll on off no good for that type of work is thAt Volvo tipper you drive I shift how do u find that on the tips

Drive it full time in manual override, MP setting though as it will change faster than in M.

Had a 3 pedal jobbie for 3 years, within a few days of getting the heap i was losing the will to live waiting for it to shuffle the (wrong) gear up at junctions etc so learned the change up points and drove it manually for the rest of the time, even had the heap stall on me when it changed mid turn at a set of traffic lights on a steep hill, useless.

Generally i go up in 2’s till about 8th or 9th and then do the last 3 or 4 singly, often drive one of our newer all singing all dancing 2 pedal Scanni’s now, exactly the same frustrating junk as the 3 pedal, without as you say the benefit of fine control for manoeuvering.

Better fuel consumption that in auto too, you’re in the right gear at junctions so keep momentum without the revs going off the scale.

I bloody loath satan’s sodding auto box, all (Volvo excepted) are about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Whilst I’ll agree it isn’t the most wonderful thing ever I’ve got used to my 3 pedal and now my brain hurts when I have to drive our manual R480.

I found that changing the start gear in my R420 8 wheeler to 3rd helped, not sure if it would on a 340 but got to be worth a go.

This advice was given to me.

Whilst I do get frustrated with my Opticruise sometimes when pulling away (although I think my technique could be polished) I’ve become a convert in the short time I’ve had it.

Try re-programming the gear that you pull away in. To do this

  1. Turn the ignition on
  2. Select A
  3. Push the clutch to the floor
  4. Select AH
  5. Manually select the gear that you want to pull away in (3 or 4)
  6. Select N
  7. Lift the clutch

You will hear a ping from the dash and from then onwards when ever you select A it will automatically go into the pull away gear that you have chosen.

Now. I didn’t know about that and as we pride ourselves on learning something new from this site. I will remember that. But it does show that with proper instruction or even by RTFM instruction, the automatic box is here to stay and is a huge improvement on what came before.

There are too many drivers who just dismiss them out of hand, like Luddites, they would prefer to go back to easy start and cranking handles.

We all used to have TB, now we have antibiotics. It is called progress :stuck_out_tongue:

u can do it without dipping clutch once u selected a gear and put it back in n it should ping and say start … with number of gear selected its great if ur picking a heavy load up and setting off in 3rd is no good if u get a new one like an 11 plate its selects its own starting gear for the weight ur dragging :sunglasses:

On the newer models there isn’t an H, its a symbol like the refresh symbol, and the above procedure just ain’t working for me. It strikes in third setting off loaded, and I keep forgetting to knock it down to second.

I do sometimes drive in manual, but then usually forget after a while and start wondering why i’m getting bounced out of the seat when I slow down!

Yes mate it’s I shift it is very good just knock it in to manual before you go off road and it’s fine. Wouldn’t want to go back to a manual now.

On the newer models I’ve driven, you can set the start gear in the menu, option between 2, 3, 4 and auto if I remember correctly.

Brilliant cheers, yes its in the start menu: vehicle settings: start gear.

Cheers.

Have been driving a hire truck for the last few days its a scania p340 roll on roll off fitted with opticruise.
This is the first auto truck i have driven and was looking for some advice. I like having a clutch pedal as it offers good control when manovering in thght spaces and picking up and dropping bins. However i find when it changes gears its nowhere as smmoth as when i change gear in a manual and also seems to change up through the lower gears with bigger jumps than i would use.
I was just looking for some pointers and advice that may iron out these problems as no one on my firm has any experince of these and the hire company just left it to us to get on with.

Opticruise compared with lots of other autos on the market is not very good.

I’ve been driving opticruise fitted trucks for the last 2 and half years and i find it ,slow, jerky and bloody infuriating at times.

What gear does your truck choose to start away in? Scania recommend second but some are programmed to start in third.
Its simple to change to second for a start up gear, stop the truck, switch the ignition on and put it into high(h on the lever),dip the clutch,it should come up with second as a start up gear and you just change back into neutral, and thats it selected.

I find to get good fuel economy is to not use 12th gear, leave it in 11th and you’ll find fuel economy rockets,i can get on a good run 10.5 to 11mpg if i let it shift up in auto to 11th and then keeping 11th by changing to manual to stop it upshifting.

I find when coming to a rounabout to brake that little bit harder to encourage it to downshift a bit softer rather than the jerky downshift it can do…

The Gearbox is supposed to adjust to suit your driving so good luck with it.

Me,i wish Scania would buy a Volvo and see how they’ve done “i” shift and copy them as i found it to be one of the best on the market.
