Just curious.
What do they signify.
Is it to do with chassis heights?
C seems to be for construction chassis’
L, M, H - Low, Med, High perhaps?
D ?
G?
Any others?

some on here would have a different use for the C,cant help but then has long as its got all the wheels and right lump in it, who cares what letters its got?.
I just have an irrational desire to know really useless stuff. It must mean summat, therefore I want to find out.
Discopete will be the man to answer that, he works in a Scania dealership so will know for sure.
I think the G is for heavy duty, or at least one of the letters is for something like that.
I think it is to do with the intended use of the truck.
I think D, for example is for like, local distribution. (e.g. 4 wheel rigids)
L, for long distance work. (e.g. 6 leg tractor units)
And so on.
I remember reading it somewhere years ago. The above might not be the exact meanings, but I think that is the general idea.
Like Neil says - I’m sure Discopete will know exactly what they are.
I think you’re about on the money, all of the 4 wheelers I have driven were D’s this current one is an L (ex 6x2 tractor), last 8 wheeler was a C and had a sky high cab like the tippers on C’s. Someone I know has got an 8 wheeler on a G and it looks fairly hefty.
Here you go, now you can sleep tonight 8wheels
D = Distribution chassis - mostly rigids
L = Long Distance - mostly tractor units
C = Construction - it has high ground clearance
G - Heavy Duty - it has a double skin chassis apparently
Yep your about right
D - Distribution Chassis (rigid etc)
L - Long Distance Chassis (tractor units)
C - Construction Chassis (tippers, mixers,skips,8 wheelers)
G - Heavy Duty Chassis (Heavy Haulage, Rough working conditions)
H - Extra Heavy Duty Chassis, (twin chassis) (serious Heavy Haulage)
and the numbers refer to the engine size and series of truck
94 - 9 litre 4 series
124 - 12 litre 4 series
and the most common question I get asked
“What does the red spot in the 420 badge mean”
Answer
It means the engine has the High Pressure Injection system on it (HPI)
Discopete:
G - Heavy Duty Chassis (Heavy Haulage, Rough working conditions)
H - Extra Heavy Duty Chassis, (twin chassis) (serious Heavy Haulage)
i thought the H was the same as the G on the 4 series, but from the 2 and 3 series?
P is for poorest effort that resembles a truck ever to be made since the Romans built carts that were more luxurious.
the red spot is the newer hpi engine and it has the newer gear stick.
124 is 12 litre 4 series
or
94 is 9 litre 4 series
if it has someting like 113 it a 11 litre 3 series
Thanks fellas, I’d sussed the numbers but was unsure about the letters. Never noticed a red spot though.
Scania is Swedish for crap.
I know cos I drive one most of the time and I don’t think any of the designers have ever heard of driver comfort.
Each to his own I guess but try a stint with Tesco in a basic Merc Axor and you’ll be pining for the whine of those Swedish turbochargers again!
Perhaps they do lack a few comforts and the 3 speed box is weird at first but I like them. Then again I did learn to drive in a 92 so have a soft spot.
Given the choice I’d alway go for AEC.
