As expected, we know all the truck manufacturers keep an eye on each others progress regarding design and future developement etc. We all have our own favourite trucks, mine being the volvo FH i shift. But my personal opinion is that Scanias have been streets ahead of the rest for years regarding rear view mirrors and blindspots etc. Why haven`t the rest nicked some of their ideas in this department.? Agree or disagree, your opinions please.
I would have agreed with you about Scania mirrors, until the latest ones.
That wide angle mirror on the drivers side creates a huge blind spot in front of it, easily big enough for a car or bike to be hidden in.
On the 4 series, you only had the main big mirror, set fairly low. You could see over it quite easily (well I could). To see what is in the wide angle mirror now, all you had to do was turn your head to the right.
Now, to see round it, you have to rock backwards and forwards quite a lot and you can still miss a car if your timing is wrong.
Several years ago Daf welded an extra 6 inches onto the back of the 95 and called it the XF. That 6 inches made a huge difference in the amount of room in the cab. Why have so few others done that?
MAN might have with the TGA XXL’s now. Merc’ definately haven’t in their Mega Space, neither have Scania or Volvo. The Magnum is only a fraction smaller but I don’t think the Premiums have anything like the room.
Not sure about the big Stralis cab, I’ve had an Active Space (for a week) which seemed pretty roomy, but lack of a fixed passenger seat would give that impression (and I was driving a 4 series topliner then).
I have to agree with Si about the Scania mirrors. There was nothing wrong with the 4-series ones and I liked them too. Same applies to the mk.1 Volvo FH and FMs. Their mirrors were excellent, very stylish and easy to use but the current ones are ridiculously huge and create severe blind spots on both sides; I don’t like them AT ALL.
The mirrirs on my FM version 2 are great to see what’s going on all around you. But the drivers side one is good at hiding cars on roundabouts.
The 4 series mirrors were far too low its ok if your a dwarf but for those of us a little taller than 6 foot they are a pain in the arse.
I often thought that they should make the housing out of clear see through plastic in order to create les of a blind spot.
from what i’ve seen the Scania and Volvo mirrors are actually the same, but fitted up the oposite way.

My only criticism of the FH13 is the position of the mirror housing, your right it can be a pain at roundabouts.
The Scania could possibly have the best mirrors in the world
unfortunately it wouldn’t compensate for the most uncomfortable seat I have ever had to sit in.
Prefer DAF’s myself - as the best mirrors.

Yes way. Especially for the wide angle (trailer mirror) and the kerb mirror.
What makes me laugh on the 4 series is Scania obviously put a lot of time into designing the main mirrors and the sculpted wide angle mirror, then when it came to the kerb mirror they just couldnt be bothered and shoved some crappy old thing on there from the 70’s
That is so true…i was looking at one yesterday…wondering such
